Arthur Schopenhauer studierte von 1809 bis 1811 in Göttingen und besuchte vor allem historische und naturgeschichtliche Lehrveranstaltungen. Einer seiner wichtigsten Lehrer war dabei Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, der damals berühmteste Göttinger Naturforscher. Schopenhauer setzte die in Göttingen begonnenen naturwissenschaftlichen Studien auch nach der Entscheidung für eine Laufbahn als Philosoph und dem Wechsel an die neugegründete Universität in Berlin fort. Sein Interesse und seine Kenntnisse auf dem Gebiet der Naturwissenschaften und insbesondere der Physiologie sind ein wichtiger Schlüssel zum Verständnis seiner Philosophie. Schopenhauers Mitschriften von Blumenbachs Vorlesungen zur Naturgeschichte, Mineralogie, Anatomie und Physiologie dokumentieren aber nicht nur Blumenbachs Einfluss auf die intellektuelle Entwicklung des Philosophen. Die hier zusammengestellten Aufsätze verdanken sich letztlich sämtlich der langjährigen Bemühung des Autors, der Umweltgeschichte im Wissenschaftsbetrieb ihren Platz als fächerübergreifendes Gespräch zu sichern. Als Querschnitt durch seine umwelthistorischen Arbeiten der letzten Jahre dokumentieren sie einen Teil der Publikationstätigkeit des Autors. Sie hat naturgemäß ihren Schwerpunkt in biologischer Thematik, von hier aus thematisiert sie aber immer auch eine allgemein umwelthistorische Perspektive.

The six studies compiled in this volume probe the structural changes and shifting boundaries of political life in the 1960s and 1970s to assess the impact of the 1968 movement. Among other phenomena, they examine the theater as a potential medium for staging politics, and television as a vehicle in social protest.

This book deals with the nationalization of the bank sector in the context of the Portuguese revolutionary process of 1974-75. Based on a vast collection of documentary sources and inspired by a set of theoretical tools developed by Mario Tronti, Walter Benjamin and Michel Foucault, it starts with an inescapable interrogation: how could a measure that was not included in the Armed Forces Movement Program and had such considerable implications, both in the short and in the long term, obtained enough support to be included in the Constitution as an irreversible conquest of the working class? The response developed in the following pages establishes an articulation between social conflicts and political economy, identifying it as the centre of gravity of the process that would lead to the nationalization of the bank sector. In this sense, it analyzes the way in which social struggles contributed to a process of cumulative radicalization, initiated at the end of the Estado Novo and which would gain increasing intensity throughout the revolutionary process. At the same time, it seeks to understand why the diagnosis of the economic situation contributed to polarize the political struggle, by mapping the lines of force of a debate that underwent successive declinations and covered different aspects, such as inflation, labour laws or property relations. In a context of economic and revolutionary crisis, the banking sector became a critical point in the capital-labour relation: credit concession would take on decisive importance after 25 April, with labour-unions accusing bankers of pursuing destabilization strategies associated with the practice of "economic sabotage"; in the wake of its nationalization, in turn, government officials, managers and trade-unionists sought to put "the banks at the service of the people", in the context of a brief experience of "socialist transition" that would make its way into the text of the Constitution. The case of the bank sector is therefore a privileged interpretative-key to identify the set of problems and the horizon of possibilities that dominated the historical conjuncture following the 25th of April. This book is a contribution to the maturation of the historiographical field dedicated to the interpretation of the revolutionary process of 1975-75, establishing a critical dialogue with the works that have been produced on the subject over the last years.

Franz Mayr was "one of the most interesting of catholic missionaries in Southern Africa" states Professor Joy Brain ("University of Durban") in the foreword she wrote for this first edition of his writings. Mayr was born in the Austrian province of Tyrol in 1865, educated as a priest in the diocese of Brixen and arrived in Natal (South Africa) at the beginning of May 1890, inspired by the work being done there by the Trappist-Monks led by Abbot Franz Pfanner. Mayr was physically handicapped and soon left the trappists but just to offer his services to the vicar apostolic of Natal, Bishop Charles Jolivet, who accepted him for work among the African population. He was sent to Pietermaritzburg then capital of the British colony to take over the care of the African parishioners to bring the "good news" to those who had never heard it. He founded several new mission-stations in Natal, Southern Rhodesia (present day Zimbabwe) and Swaziland where he was killed by a native robber in 1914. Mayr - a man of many talents - was a gifted linguist, studied and published books in several African languages. He was interested in cultural anthropology and collected information about African customs. It is now more than a hundred years since Franz Mayr began his work of evangelisation and scholarship in Southern Africa. Publishing his letters and articles - kept by several archives in Europe - should help to remember a man of the Habsburg-Monarchy who went to preach the gospel to the so called heathen of Africa. Although Austria or Austria-Hungary never owned colonies in Africa many of its inhabitants left their homes to work in catholic mission-stations around the continent. Several introductory chapters in this book explain the particular historical context which has to be put into consideration when reading Mayrs' writings. From there we learn about his life, his work, how he treated the native population, what he thought about other religious congregations around him, the colonialists and about troubles when trying to convince people to believe in the only - the "European God". The missionary deserves to be better known. The present edition of historical sources is to be seen as a most relevant step allowing us to interpret his personality adequately.

Die gesammelten, aus zahlreichen Archiven im In- und Ausland stammenden Schriften Mayrs, umfassen Briefe, Tagebucheinträge, Auszüge aus Chroniken, seine in Missions- und ethnologischen Zeitschriften und Tageszeitungen erschienenen Artikel sowie zahlreiche zeitgenössische Photographien. Obwohl unser Land bzw. die Habsburger-Monarchie selbst keine Kolonien auf diesem Kontinent besaß, wirkte doch eine beträchtliche Anzahl von ihnen u. a. in katholischen Stationen. Ihre Rolle in der Interaktion mit der einheimischen Bevölkerung und die Wirkung ihrer Missionsartikel auf das Afrikabild ist bisher nahezu unerforscht geblieben. Mayr war nur einer jener Österreicher und Österreicherinnen, die im Zuge der katholischen Missionseuphorie des 19. und beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts ausreisten, um Afrikaner und Afrikanerinnen zum Christentum zu "bekehren". Er wurde 1865 in der Osttiroler Gemeinde Nussdorf geboren und verbrachte seine Gymnasialzeit in Brixen, wo er auch das Priesterseminar absolvierte. Ab 1890 wirkte er in der ehemaligen britischen Kolonie Natal (Südafrika), in Südrhodesien (heutiges Zimbabwe) und in Swaziland, wo er 1914 einem Mordanschlag zum Opfer fiel. Unter seiner Leitung entstanden mehrere Missionsstationen u. a. das Projekt "Maryvale", ein Dorf für die einheimischen katholischen Zulus, heute ein Stadtteil von Pietermaritzburg. Über die vorhandenen Quellen erhält man Einblick in den Alltag des Missionars, Informationen über Hemmnisse seiner Arbeit und über Erfolgserlebnisse, seine Einstellung zur afrikanischen Bevölkerung, zur jeweiligen Kolonialregierung, zu anderen Religionsgemeinschaften oder über seinen persönlichen Gemütszustand. F. Mayr schrieb mehrere Bücher in afrikanischen Sprachen, hatte ein Faible für Musik und Photographie und sammelte leidenschaftlich ethnologische Gegenstände, die er teilweise afrikanischen Museen überließ, teilweise für Ausstellungen nach Europa sandte. Erst kürzlich entdeckte man im Herbarium der "Universität von Natal" eine Pflanzensammlung, die er angelegt hatte. Sie wird derzeit von einer Gruppe von Wissenschaftlern ausgewertet und stellt eine der frühesten Dokumentationen über den Gebrauch von Heilpflanzen der Zulus dar. Fast neunzig Jahre nach seinem Tod scheint nun also das Interesse am Leben des Österreichers zuzunehmen.Der wichtigste Schritt für die wissenschaftliche Bearbeitung seiner Biographie ist mit der vorliegenden Herausgabe seiner Schriften getan. Völlig in Vergessenheit geraten, soll durch die chronologisch angeordnete Herausgabe dieser Dokumente Mayrs Leben und Werk in Erinnerung gerufen werden. Zu ihrer Interpretierbarkeit bzw. zum besseren Verständnis sind den einzelnen Abschnitten Kapitel zum historischen Kontext vorangestellt.

In the rational modern world, belief in the supernatural seemingly has been consigned to the worlds of entertainment and fantasy. Yet belief in other worldly phenomena, from poltergeists to telepathy, remains strong, as Gillian Bennett's research shows. Especially common is belief in continuing contact with, or the continuing presence of, dead family members. Bennett interviewed women in Manchester, England, asking them questions about ghosts and other aspects of the supernatural. (Her discussion of how her research methods and interview techniques evolved is in itself valuable.) She first published the results of the study in the well-received Traditions of Belief: Women and the Supernatural, which has been widely used in folklore and women's studies courses. ""Alas, Poor Ghost!"" extensively revises and expands that work. In addition to a fuller presentation and analysis of the original field research and other added material, the author, assisted by Kate Bennett, a gerontological psychologist, presents and discusses new research with a group of women in Leicester, England.Bennett is interested in more than measuring the extent of belief in other worldly manifestations. Her work explores the relationship between narrative and belief. She anticipated that her questions would elicit from her interviewees not just yes or no replies but stories about their experiences that confirmed or denied notions of the supernatural. The more controversial the subject matter, the more likely individuals were to tell stories, especially if their answers to questions of belief were positive. These were most commonly individualized narratives of personal experience, but they contained many of the traditional motifs and other content, including belief in the supernatural, of legends. Bennett calls them memorates and discusses the cultural processes, including ideas of what is a ""proper"" experience of the supernatural and a ""proper"" telling of the story, that make them communal as well as individual. These memorates provide direct and vivid examples of what the storytellers actually believe and disbelieve. In a final section, Bennett places her work in historical context through a discussion of case studies in the history of supernatural belief.

Frankreich stand in der Zwischenkriegszeit nicht nur in Europa unter dem Druck expansiver Diktaturen, sondern auch in Asien. Die Bedrohung durch Japan wurde drängend, als das Kaiserreich ab Juli 1937 China mit Krieg überzog und auch vor der Küste der französischen Kolonie Indochina seine Macht deutlich demonstrierte. Die Bonner Dissertation von Volker Nies untersucht erstmals, was Paris unternahm, um seine Großmachtposition in Ostasien zu behaupten. Frankreich suchte auf zuweilen doppelbödige Art die Nähe zu Japan. Paris ging dabei so weit, wie es die Rücksicht auf die Beziehungen zu den USA und Großbritannien erlaubte, die Japans Aufstieg kritisch sahen. Für Paris war der virtuose Einsatz diplomatischer und militärischer, wirtschaftlicher und geheimdienstlicher Instrumente im Fernen Osten am Ende erfolglos, denn fast zeitgleich mit dem Einmarsch deutscher und italienischer Truppen rückte im Juni 1940 ein japanisches Vorauskommando in Indochina ein.

Albert Hoffstädt, a classicist by training and polylingual humanist by disposition, has for 25 years been the editor chiefly responsible for the development and acquisition of manuscripts in Asian Studies for Brill. During that time he has shepherded over 700 books into print and has distinguished himself as a figure of exceptional discernment and insight in academic publishing. He has also become a personal friend to many of his authors. A subset of these authors here offers to him in tribute and gratitude 22 essays on various topics in Asian Studies. Modern medical technologies, especially the pre-implantation and prenatal diagnosis, have given the possibility of preventive dealing with the risks of physical or mental disabilities. On the other side there is the call for support and “inclusion” of people with disabilities. These opposing trends are critically analyzed and discussed in depth from a legally, genetic, as well as from a medical, social and ethical point of view.

Menschen mit genetischen Behinderungen körperlicher oder seelischer Art gibt es seit Anbeginn der Menschheit. Moderne medizinische Technologien, namentlich die der Präimplantations- und Pränataldiagnostik, eröffnen nicht nur der Medizin, sondern auch der Gesamtgesellschaft die Möglichkeit des präventiven Umgangs mit genetisch bedingten Erkrankungsrisiken. Auf der anderen Seite besteht der gesellschaftliche Anspruch nach einer Förderung und „Inklusion“ von Menschen mit Behinderung. Diese gegenläufigen Entwicklungen bedürfen der näheren Analyse und kritischen Diskussion. Der vorliegende Band ist aus Vorträgen und Diskussionen eines Expertenworkshops, ausgerichtet vom Institut für Humangenetik am Universitätsklinikum Göttingen in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Göttinger Zentrum für Medizinrecht, hervorgegangen. Clarence "Cap" Cornish was an Indiana pilot whose life spanned all but five years of the Century of Flight. Born in Canada in 1898, Cornish grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He began flying at the age of nineteen, piloting a "Jenny" aircraft during World War I, and continued to fly for the next seventy-eight years. In 1995, at the age of ninety-seven, he was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest actively flying pilot. The mid-1920s to the mid-1950s were Cornish's most active years in aviation. During that period, sod runways gave way to asphalt and concrete; navigation evolved from the iron rail compass to radar; runways that once had been outlined at night with cans of oil topped off with flaming gasoline now shimmered with multicolored electric lights; instead of being crammed next to mailbags in open-air cockpits, passengers sat comfortably in streamlined, pressurized cabins. In the early phase of that era, Cornish performed aerobatics and won air races. He went on to run a full-service flying business, served as chief pilot for the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel, managed the city's municipal airport, helped monitor and maintain safe skies above the continental United States during World War II, and directed Indiana's first Aeronautics Commission. Dedicating his life to flight and its many ramifications, Cornish helped guide the sensible development of aviation as it grew from infancy to maturity. Through his many personal experiences, the story of flight nationally is played out.

This edition collects instructions, police ordinances, decrees and related normative sources concerning the economic activities of landlords and subjects of the estates Feldsberg (today Valtice in the Czech Republic) and Wilfersdorf in the north-eastern corner of Lower Austria from the end of the sixteenth century up to 1815. All this sources illustrate the social, cultural and economic microcosm created and imagined by the authorities and show how the landlords tried to dominate and control their subjects with the help of their administrative apparatus and through regulations.

Instruktionen, Ordnungen und Dekrete der niederösterreichischen Herrschaftskomplexe Feldsberg (heute CZ) und Wilfersdorf der Familie Liechtenstein verdeutlichen exemplarisch, welche Lebensbereiche adelige Grundherren der österreichischen Länder zu regeln versuchten. Die Quellen bieten einen Einblick in das Zusammenspiel von Grundherren, Herrschaftsbeamten und Untertanen von 1600 bis 1815.

Arthur Schnitzler gab angeblich keine Interviews, vermied es, Umfragen zu beantworten und äußerte sich nicht öffentlich. Doch über 180 weitgehend vergessene, bislang unerforscht Texte widerlegen diese Behauptung und bieten ein neues Bild seiner öffentlichen Person. Die Interviews, Meinungsäußerungen und Leserbriefe belegen Schnitzlers Bedeutung als Leserbriefschreiber und Interviewpartner für seine Zeitgenossinnen und Zeitgenossen. Martin Anton Müllers Edition stellt eine »öffentliche Biografie« dar, die dokumentiert, was man schon zu Lebzeiten von der Privatperson Schnitzlers wissen konnte. Der ausführliche Kommentar erläutert Fakten und Hintergründe, das Register erleichtert den Zugang und das Nachwort bietet eine vorzügliche Überblicksdarstellung. Insgesamt ergibt sich aus dieser Edition ein überraschendes Bild des berühmten Autors Arthur Schnitzler, der entgegen seiner angeblichen Zurückhaltung, in der Öffentlichkeit ein engagierter und eloquenter Gesprächspartner und Schriftsteller war.

""Denkräume"" und ""Denkbewegungen"" sind Metaphernfelder, die häufig in wissenschaftlichen Diskussionen und in der Theoriebildung Verwendung finden, wenn beispielsweise von der nötigen ""Verortung"" der Gedanken, oder auch von der Konstruktion von ""Theoriegebäuden"" gesprochen wird.Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, jenseits klassischer Raumtheorie diesen Bereich der sprachlichen Verfasstheit wissenschaftlicher Texte und der damit verknüpften Sprach- und Bildlogik zu untersuchen.

Nur sieben Jahre lang bestand das Königreich Westphalen unter der Regierung von König Jerome Bonaparte. In diesem Modellstaat erhielt die Beherrschung der französischen Sprache einen ganz besonderen Stellenwert. Neben der Thematisierung der Sprachbarriere verlief die Kommunikation zwischen Deutsch- und Französischsprachigen allerdings offenbar so »normal«, dass ihre Überlieferung eher zufällig ist. Claudie Paye untersucht, wer in Westphalen in dieser Zeit »der französischen Sprache mächtig« war und wie die Zeitgenossen mit Überwachung und Zensur umgingen. The book is based on the research project „The Esterházy Landscape Garden in Eisenstadt“ funded by the Jubilee Fonds of the Austrian National Bank (no.5164) and was published with the aid of a printing subsidy granted by FWF.For the first time one of the outstanding historical gardens of Austria is presented in a comprehensive monography. The contributions cover a wide range of topics from aspects of cultural heritage preservation and the history of the shaping of the garden as well as the topochronological analysis of maps and plans by means of historical cartography to an in-depth study of plant history focussing on one of the most famous greenhouse plant collections of the first decades of the 19th century as well as on the varieties of trees and shrubs of the landscape garden itself. According to the outstanding importance of the greenhouses and their plant collections a specificfocus is laid upon the exploration of the building history and the species-specific analysis of the collections. A detailed inventory of the historical composition of open ground species of trees and shrubs of the landscape garden provides insight into the stages of the shaping of the garden from a botanical view. This inventory is contrasted with the actual situation in regard to ecological, vegetation-scientific and floristic aspects. The second edition of the book is extended by a study of theformerly landscaped area of the so-called Gloriette (Temple of Mary) which is located outside the garden but represents an integral part of the original concept of a designed landscape. The final chapter serves as a detailed guide to the connoisseur by describing an annotated walk through the garden enriched by a wealth of remarks of general historical, of literary and plant-historical as well as garden-historical background.

Die Ergebnisse des vom Jubiläumsfonds der Österreichischen Nationalbank mit der Nr. 5164 geförderten Forschungsprojektes "Der Esterhazy'sche Schloßpark Eisenstadt." wurden mit Hilfe eines Druckkostenzuschusses des FWF in Buchform publiziert.Erstmals in Österreich wird einer der großen und bedeutenden historischen Gärten dieses Landes umfassend dargestellt. Der Bogen des monographischen Werkes spannt sich über Betrachtungen aus Sicht der Gartendenkmalpflege und eine chronologische Geschichte der Entwicklungsstufen des Gartens über die Analyse der Gartenpläne und Karten auf Grundlage kartographiegeschichtlicher Forschungen bis hin zu einer umfassenden Betrachtung der Geschichte der Pflanzenbestände des Gartens. Der europaweit überragenden Bedeutung der Orangerie und ihrer Pflanzensammlungen in den ersten Jahrzehnten des 19.Jahrhunderts gemäß folgt eine Untersuchung der Baugeschichte der Treibhausanlagen und eine umfassende artenspezifische Analyse der Pflanzensammlungen. Eine exakte Beschreibung der historischen Freilandpflanzenbestände zeigt wichtige und interessante botanikgeschichtliche Aspekte der Genese des Gartens auf Die aktuelle ökologische, vegetationskundliche und floristische Situation wird im Spiegel dieser historischen Ausgangslage dargestellt. Das außerhalb des Gartens liegende, gleichwohl in Kommunikation mit diesem gestaltete Areal des Marientempels (Gloriette) wird in der erweiterten 2.Auflage des Buches in einem eigenen Beitrag vorgestellt. Ein faktenreicher Führer durch den Garten für kundige Gartenliebhaber/innen in Form eines durch gartenkünstlerische, botanische, historische und literarische Anmerkungen bereicherten Spazierganges rundet das Werk ab.

Seit vielen Jahren wird eine intensive Debatte über die Auswirkungen exzessiver Mediennutzung geführt. Prominente Themen sind die Auswirkungen gewalthaltiger Medien auf gewalttätiges Verhalten oder die Auswirkungen exzessiver Mediennutzung auf schulische Leistungen. Ferner wird die Frage nach einer „Mediensucht“ diskutiert. Oft verharrt diese Debatte jedoch, selbst in der Wissenschaft, an den beiden Polen „Medien wirken“ und „Medien wirken nicht“, die beide in ihrer Schwarz-Weiß-Malerei das Bild verfehlen.Für die Wirkbereiche Schulleistung, Gewaltverhalten, Fettleibigkeit, Computerspielabhängigkeit sowie für die Prävention einer exzessiven Mediennutzung, wird zunächst ein umfassender Überblick über den internationalen Forschungsstand gegeben. Anschließend werden eigene Ergebnisse der breit angelegten 4jährigen Längsschnittstudie Berliner Längsschnitt Medien präsentiert. Im Ergebnis zeigt sich ein differenzierteres, aber dennoch eindeutiges Bild: Medien sind in allen genannten Bereichen ein wichtiger und bedeutsamer Risikofaktor, aber beileibe nicht der einzige.

The monography traces the complex relationships between political discourses on the Danube and the aestheticization of the river landscape. It shows the making of the idea of a united Danube region paralleled by the conception of the region as a treshold between the East and the West in the 19th century.

Die Monografie zeigt die komplexen Beziehungen, die zwischen der politischen Diskursivierung des Stromes und seinem gleichzeitigen ästhetischen Verfügbarmachen bestanden. Sie zeichnet nach, wie beide, Politisierung und Ästhetisierung, die Idee eines einheitlichen Donauraumes, zugleich aber auch die Vorstellung von der Donau als Schwelle hervorbrachten.

Bucovina was an integral part of Habsburg Empire since 1775. Starting from a pure political construction on the European map of power at the end of 18th century this small area developed into a well integrated Austrian crown land. A crown land, which succeeded to form a certain regional identity – conform to the Habsburg state ideology. Till the outbreak of First World War national rivalries played a certain role for regional politics in the county but were moderate in general. Especially this situation was grounded in a direct liaison of this small province situated on the Eastern slopes of Carpathians with Vienna as imperial centre. A development which aimed towards steadily improving inner consolidation and balance in comparison with the other crown lands of the Empire. Only the outcome of the First World War, as Bucovina became part of the Romanian kingdom, loosing its geo strategic position as a bridge between East and West, showed in its consequences the former importance of this organic exchange with Vienna, shaping the provinces society and cultural landscape.The genesis of Bucovina region at the periphery of a European Empire from the end of 18th up to the beginning of 20th century as well as the structural persistence of the cultural landscape’s characteristics is centrally focussed in this study. The analyses of spatial processes as well as their genesis, shaped by a changing geopolitical situation, were of main interest for the research. Since the midst of 19th century a serious and existential national tension within the Bucovina was growing which could only partially be influenced by the province politics itself. A tension in between a search for a distinguished political position, the new idea of nation state and a overall-covering ideology of Commonness, a tension between growing regional identity, of beeing Bucovina and increasing national claims. The study tries to draw a knew, integral and less known picture of this variously shaped cultural landscape – apart from common nationalistic and segmented analyses.

Die Bukowina, seit 1775 zu den Ländern der Habsburgermonarchie gehörend, entwickelte sich ausgehend von einem politischen Konstrukt auf der Landkarte Europas im letzten Drittel des 18. Jh. hin zu einem durchaus selbstbewussten Kronland, dem es bis 1914 gelungen war, eine (staatskonforme) regionale Identität aufzubauen. Bis zum Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkrieges spielten nationale Rivalitäten eine gewisse Rolle, waren in ihren Forderungen jedoch als moderat einzuschätzen. Besonders die direkte Abhängigkeit dieses kleinen Landstrichs am Ostabhang der Karpaten von Wien als Reichshauptstadt legte den wesentlichen Baustein zu dieser Entwicklung. Eine Entwicklung, die v. a. auf innere Konsolidierung und Angleichung an die übrigen Kronländer der Monarchie gerichtet war. Erst die Folgen des Ersten Weltkrieges mit der Angliederung der Bukowina an das Königreich Rumänien legten die tatsächliche Bedeutung dieses so mit dem Zentrum der Monarchie verflochtenen Kronlandes, das von seiner Brückenstellung profitiert hatte, offen. Das Werden der Region Bukowina an der Peripherie eines europäischen Großreiches vom ausgehenden 18. bis zum beginnenden 20. Jahrhundert und die strukturelle Persistenz kulturlandschaftlicher Charaktereigenschaften sind zentraler Gegenstand dieser Arbeit. Der Brennpunkt liegt dabei in der Analyse raumwirksamer Gestaltungsprozesse sowie ihrer Genese – ausgelöst durch eine sich wandelnde geopolitische Situation. Spätestens seit der Mitte des 19. Jh. erwuchs für die Bukowina eine existentielle Spannung zwischen dessen eigener Positionsfindung, neuer Nationalstaatlichkeit und übergeordneter Ideologie des Gemeinsamen, dem Aufbau regionaler Identitäten, eigenständigem Landesbewusstsein und nationalen Forderungen. Die vorliegende Studie versucht insgesamt – abseits jener über weite Strecken des 20. Jh. bestimmenden Vorgaben national segmentierter Erkenntnisgerichtetheit – ein in der bisherigen Beschäftigung mit der Bukowina weniger bekanntes, auf eigenen Forschungen beruhendes Bild einer im Inneren vielgestaltigen Kulturlandschaft und ihre Genese zu zeichnen.

Wie konstituiert sich die Sonderpädagogik als Wissenschaft? Diese Arbeit untersucht am Beispiel der Pädagogik bei geistiger Behinderung (PbgB) die disziplinäre Konstitution und die Etablierung ihres Fachwissens. Ausgehend von Ludwik Flecks Theorie von Denkstil und Denkkollektiv wird analysiert, wie sich eine Wissenschaft anhand eines Personenkreises konstituiert, den sie einerseits durch Bezeichnungen abgrenzt, andererseits aber als heterogen entlang von Differenzkategorien beschreibt. Die sozialwissenschaftlich und diskurslinguistisch informierte Analyse zentraler Lehrbücher (1991–2021) deckt dabei ein fundamentales Konstitutionsproblem auf: Die PbgB postuliert ihre Einheit, indem sie die explizierte Heterogenität ihres Gegenstandes verkennt. Die Befunde stoßen eine notwendige Debatte über die Fundamente der PbgB an.

The study examines Jorge Semprun´s literary reflections on his experiences made in the concentration camp of Buchenwald in "Le grand voyage" (1963), "Quel beau dimanche!" (1980), "L´écriture ou la vie" (1994) and "Le mort qu´il faut" (2001) with the aim to show the development in his retrospective treatment of the past. Therefore the texts are not considered as a unified "ecriture" but as a progressing approximation to his experiences in Buchenwald.The study deals in narratological and poetological terms with Semprun´s growing awareness of what Buchenwald means to him: While "Le grand voyage" is deeply influenced by the authors communistic view. "Quel beau dimanche!" reflects Sempruns disconcertion caused by his awareness of the parallel existence of concentration camps in Nazi-Germany and in the Soviet Union. "L´ecriture ou la vie" and "Le mort qu´il faut", for their part, are written by an author who considers himself as survivor and witness.This process is accompanied by Semprun´s shift to literature as a universe implying sense and creating identity. This becomes vitally important after his dissociation from communism and enables him to speak extensively about his experiences with death. Therefore Semprun´s conception of "witnessship" can be described as diametrically opposed to factual documentation. It is rather intended to function within a literary field: Only the intensive use of intertextuality allowes Semprun to comprehend Buchenwald finally as the centre of his life and as the origin of his own identity as well as to communicate his "truth" to the reader.

Die Studie untersucht Jorge Sempruns literarische Gestaltung seiner Erfahrungen des Konzentrationslagers Buchenwald in "Le grand voyage (1963), "Quel beau dimanche!" Ziel der Arbeit ist es, Entwicklungslinien und Tendenzen in der retrospektiven Auseinandersetzung und literarischen Bearbeitung des persönlich Erlebten aufzuzeigen. Demzufolge werden die Texte nicht als einheitliches Sprechen, sondern als fortschreitende erzählerische Annäherung an den miterlebten Tod von Buchenwald betrachtet. Die narratologisch und poetologisch ausgerichtete Studie fokussiert den Bewusstwerdungsprozess, der in den Texten zum Ausdruck gelangt: Während "Le grand voyage" noch deutlich vom kommunistischen Weltbild des Autors geprägt ist, spiegelt sich in "Quel beau dimanche!" - geschrieben im Bewusstsein über die gleichzeitige Existenz nationalsozialistischer und stalinistischer Lager - die existentielle Verunsicherung Sempruns, wohingegen in "L´ecriture ou la vie" und "Le mort qu´il faut" die Selbstdefinierung als Überlebender und Zeuge dominiert.Paralell zu dieser Entwicklung vollzieht sich Sempruns Hinwendung zur Literatur als identitäts- und sinnstiftendem Universum, das, insbesondere nach der Lossage vom Kommunismus, verstärkt in den Vordergrund rückt und erst die umfassende Sagbarkeit der Erfahrung ermöglicht. Sempruns Konzeption von Zeugenschaft steht folglich in direkter Opposition zu einem dokumentarischen Bezeugen und bewegt sich stattdessen innerhalb eines genuin literarischen Feldes. Nur durch den intensiven Einsatz intertextueller Bezugnahmen gelingt es dem Autor, die Erfahrung von Buchenwald als Zentrum seines Lebens sowie als Ursprung seines Ichs zu begreifen und diese "Wahrheit" dem Leser mitzuteilen.

Die Gründung der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen beruhte auf einem weitgehend neuen Konzept, das vom Geist der Aufklärung durchzogen auf Toleranz gründete und jeglichem Extremismus und Sekretierertum abhold war. Diesem Prinzip war auch die Medizinische Fakultät von Anfang an verpflichtet. Durch das von ihr vertretene Ausbildungsmodell des praktisch-klinischen Unterrichts am Krankenbett gelang es bereits in der Aufbauphase entscheidende Impulse zu setzen, die für die medizinische Ausbildung über Göttingen hinaus richtungsweisend wurden. Damit trug die Medizinische Fakultät wesentlich dazu bei, den internationalen Ruhm der Georgia-Augusta zu begründen. Der Abriss mit seiner vielschichtigen Realität vermittelt Einsichten in das Selbstverständnis, die Selbstwahrnehmung und die Selbstdarstellung der Medizinischen Fakultät in ihrer Geschichte.

Rosa Schapire - emanzipierte Frau, leidenschaftliche Förderin expressionistischer Kunst, entwurzelt im Londoner Exil, aber Kämpferin bis zum Schluss. »Hätte ich im Mittelalter gelebt, ich wäre wohl eine Nonne oder Heilige geworden«, schrieb Rosa Schapire kurz vor ihrem Tod 1954. Um die Jahrhundertwende hatte sie sich gegen traditionelle Rollenbilder und für ein Leben als Intellektuelle entschieden. Als eine der ersten Frauen wurde sie im Fach Kunstgeschichte in Heidelberg promoviert, zog 1905 nach Hamburg und begeisterte sich dort für den gerade aufkommenden Expressionismus – besonders für die Künstlergruppe »Brücke« und Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, den sie später als Mäzenin unterstützte. Ihr Einsatz für die neue Kunstrichtung, die von den Nationalsozialisten als »entartet« verfemt wurde, machte sie – zumal als Jüdin – den Machthabern verdächtig. Der antisemitischen Verfolgung entging sie nur aufgrund ihrer Flucht nach London 1939. Während der Kriegsjahre baute sich Rosa Schapire dort eine neue, allerdings zeitlebens prekäre Existenz u. a. als Übersetzerin auf. Ihre Briefe aus den letzten Lebensjahren an Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, die hier erstmals umfänglich ausgewertet werden, zeigen eine exilierte Frau, die trotz Sorgen und Todessehnsucht, doch immer die Kraft fand, sich für die expressionistische Kunst einzusetzen.

This volume, which accompanies the exhibition of the same name, honours Leopold Mozart (1719-1787), who was not only a musician, composer and teacher, but also a well-informed observer of his time. His letters contain numerous details on music and cultural-historical themes, and his notes on his stay in the summer residence of Schwetzingen in the Palatinate are invaluable. The authors investigate this information and relate it to the knowledge of their respective disciplines. The result is a comprehensive picture of the Electoral Palatinate summer residence of 1763, a music-historical focal point in the third quarter of the eighteenth century.

The story of how Max Warburg became head of the family-owned bankhouse, although his brother was supposed to take over the business, was often told: When he was 12 years old, the one year older Aby offered Max his birthright for the promise to buy all the books Aby would ever need. Max accepted,and - as he later said - issued "the biggest blank cheque in my life". The paths of life of the two brothers spilt into different directions. Aby built his library into a research institute. Max developed M. M. Warburg & Co., thus the bankhouse becoming one of the most important private banks in Germany. At Simultaneously, they both pursued another goal: the foundation of the university. The brothers were among the early donors of the Hamburg Scientific Foundation (Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung). It was all about "Hamburg's mental capacity" ("Hamburgs geistige Zahlungsfähigkeit").

Although historians have devoted a great deal of attention to the development of federal government policy regarding civil rights in the quarter century following World War II, little attention has been paid to the equally important developments at the state level. Few states underwent a more dramatic transformation with regard to civil rights than Michigan did. In 1948, the Michigan Committee on Civil Rights characterized the state of civil rights in Michigan as presenting "an ugly picture." Twenty years later, Michigan was a leader among the states in civil rights legislation. "Expanding the Frontiers of Civil Rights" documents this important shift in state level policy and makes clear that civil rights in Michigan embraced not only blacks but women, the elderly, native Americans, migrant workers, and the physically handicapped.

Lying between the grammarians` and rhetors` domains, Aesop`s fables were known and employed in the Western and Eastern educational environments mainly for their intrinsically moral essence. Once having explored the literary and grammatical texts concerning the educational role of fables, the book is focussed on the direct witnesses of Latin and bilingual Latin-Greek fables (III-IV AD) coming from the Eastern school environments.

Die Waldarbeit ist eine körperlich anspruchsvolle Tätigkeit und geht mit intensiven Belastungen des Stütz- und Bewegungsapparates einher. Die Berufsgruppe der Forstwirte ist somit nicht vom, in der heutigen Gesellschaft weit verbreiteten, Risikofaktor Bewegungsmangel betroffen. Vielmehr sind stereotype Bewegungsmuster verantwortlich für die Ausprägung muskulärer Dysbalancen, die wiederum ätiologisch für Rückenbeschwerden sein können. Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Studie wurden zunächst die Bedingungen und Arbeitstätigkeiten bei der Waldarbeit analysiert. Auf der Grundlage eines biopsychosozialen Ansatzes wurde darauf aufbauend eine bewegungsbezogene Intervention für Forstwirte konzipiert. Die Zielsetzung bestand darin, die berufsbedingten Belastungen im Sinne eines sportlichen Ausgleichstrainings zu reduzieren sowie spezifische Gesundheitsressourcen zu stärken. Die Intervention wurde im betrieblichen Kontext für einen Zeitraum von drei Jahren implementiert. Die Evaluation erfolgte anhand ausgewählter motorischer und psychosozialer Parameter sowie einer Analyse des Krankenstandes. Die Ergebnisse verdeutlichen die Notwendigkeit einer bewegungsbezogenen Intervention bei einem Berufsbild mit vergleichsweise hoher körperlicher Belastung und es wurde aufgezeigt, wie eine solche Maßnahme im betrieblichen Kontext langfristig implementiert werden kann.

Eine sehr praktische theoretische Frage.Ein Rechtsprinzip allein muss das Gebäude der Gerechtigkeit tragen. Denn ohne Prinzipien, also allgemeine Regeln, lässt sich keine transparente Gleichbehandlung herstellen. Und es muss ein Prinzip genügen, da sonst juristisches Ping-Pong entsteht, genannt Abwägung. Abwägungsgerechtigkeit aber kann man nur fühlen.Seit gut 200 Jahren – Rousseau war der erste Wortführer – ist man sich einig, dass Freiheit der entscheidende Motor der Moderne ist, auch normativ. Ebenso einig ist man sich, dass ein soziales Element hinzukommen muss, ganz abgesehen von der caritas für die nicht Freiheitsfähigen. »Frei und sozial« also – aber wie als ein Prinzip, da doch beides meist als unvereinbar gilt? Das Prinzip Freiheit kann sehr wohl ein soziales Element tragen. Um der individuellen Freiheitsvoraussetzungen willen können und müssen die gemeinsamen Freiheiten ›sozial‹ abgestimmt und begrenzt werden. Denn emanzipatorische Förderung gehört zum Freiheitsprinzip. Dieser Grundgedanke wird an den Vorgaben der Klassiker und den historischen Erfahrungen überprüft.

After World War I, membership in the League of Nations represented an important step for the British Dominions on the road to foreign policy independence. The internationalism of the League of Nations was not a purely political phenomenon, but also had a social dimension. In particular, the Geneva based Secretariat of the League of Nations evolved into a hub of liberal internationalism. Benjamin Auberer examines these networks by investigating the careers of five employees of the League of Nations from Australia and New Zealand and thus contributes to a global history of the League of Nations and its bureaucracy.

Vor etwa 20 Jahren haben hybride Editionen in der Musikwissenschaft Einzug gehalten. Es sind in erster Linie Langzeitprojekte mit Laufzeiten von über 15 Jahren (z. B. OPERA, RWA, EWK, BAZ-GA) die diese Form der Edition verwenden. Dennoch gibt es kaum Forschungsliteratur zu diesem Thema. Von der Frage ausgehend, ob die hybride Edition ein Kompromiss aus traditioneller und digitaler Edition darstellt, unternimmt Dennis Ried erstmals den Versuch, den Status quo hybrider (Musik-)Editionen zu eruieren, zu dokumentieren und kritisch zu hinterfragen. "Hybrid" wird dabei stets als Zusammenspiel von "Analogem" und "Digitalem" betrachtet. Anders als traditionelle Dissertationsschriften ist diese Arbeit in zwei Teile gegliedert, wovon der erste aus einer exemplarisch angeführten und quasi eigenständigen wissenschaftlich-kritischen Edition besteht. Im zweiten Teil wird diese dann aktiv in die Theoriebildung eingebunden, um methodische Fragen gezielt erörtern zu können. By the time of the Vietnam War era, the “Mexican American Generation” had made tremendous progress both socially and politically. However, the number of Mexican Americans in comparison to the number of white prisoners of war (POWs) illustrated the significant discrimination and inequality the Chicano population faced in both military and civilian landscapes. Chicanos were disproportionately “grunts” (infantry), who were more likely to be killed when captured, while pilots and officers were more likely to be both white and held as POWs for negotiating purposes. A fascinating look at the Vietnam War era from a Chicano perspective, “I’m Not Gonna Die in this Damn Place”: Manliness, Identity, and Survival of the Mexican American Vietnam Prisoners of War gives voice to the Mexican American POWs. The stories of these men and their families provide insights to the Chicano Vietnam War experience, while also adding tremendously to the American POW story. This book is an important read for academics and military enthusiasts alike.

Die Corona-Pandemie wird den Schulbetrieb wahrscheinlich auch noch im Schuljahr 2020/2021 erheblich einschränken. Dabei stellen sich jenseits der Fragen zum Gesundheitsschutz zunehmend auch solche, die den Kern der Schule als Bildungsinstitution betreffen. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit muss dabei bildungsbenachteiligten Schüler*innen und solchen mit speziellen Förderbedarfen zu Teil werden, denn vieles spricht dafür, dass die Schere zwischen Kindern aus sozial privilegierten und benachteiligten Familien in Folge der Schulschließungen weiter aufgegangen ist. Diese Entwicklung wird sich im Zuge einer schrittweisen Öffnung der Schule fortsetzen, wenn nicht bewusst gegengesteuert wird. Notwendig ist deshalb eine breite bildungswissenschaftliche Diskussion über Ansätze und Maßnahmen, die zum Abbau der neu entstandenen und der schon bestehenden Bildungsungleichheiten beitragen.Im ersten Teil des vorliegenden Bandes werden Ergebnisse aus Erhebungen im Frühjahr 2020 vorgestellt, die Aufschluss darüber geben, wie Schüler*innen, Eltern und pädagogisches Personal die mit dem Fernunterricht verbundenen Herausforderungen erlebt haben. Die Beiträge des zweiten Teils widmen sich schulischen Problemfeldern. Lange Zeit blieb Arnswalde im Zweiten Weltkrieg von militärischen Auseinandersetzungen verschont. Erst Anfang Februar 1945 belagerten sowjetische Truppen die Stadt. Tausende Bewohner konnten nicht mehr rechtzeitig fliehen und wurden in Arnswalde eingeschlossen. Zwei Wochen lang bangten sie um ihr Leben; bis die deutsche Wehrmacht sie schließlich vom Feind unbemerkt aus der Stadt schleusen konnte. In dieser Quellenedition kommen neben Autoritätspersonen vor allem einfache Bürger zu Wort; die eindrucksvoll von ihrer Flucht aus der eingeschlossenen Stadt berichten; von ihrer Rückkehr in die Heimat; ihrer späteren Vertreibung und von den Schwierigkeiten beim Neuanfang westlich der Oder in einer Gesellschaft; die sie nicht wollte. „Man bleibt eben immer ‚der Flüchtling‘; etwas bemitleidet; geduldet; manchem allein schon durch seinen Anblick lästig; da er nur zu sehr an die Vergänglichkeit irdischen Besitzes erinnert“; schrieb der Arnswalder Lehrer Werner Riepe 1946 an seine Lebensgefährtin. Seine Einschätzung scheint angesichts heutiger politischer und gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen immer noch erschreckend aktuell zu sein.

Im Herbst 2017 ist Jürgen Basedow als Direktor am Hamburger Max-Planck-Institut für ausländisches und internationales Privatrecht in den Ruhestand getreten. The Mulukī Ain of 1854—the law code with constitutional features drafted at the initiative of Prime Minister Jaṅga Bahādura Rāṇā—is the foundational legal text for modern Nepal. It covers almost every aspect of public, criminal, private and religious law, ranging from the organisation of the state and courts to murder and other delicts, the workings of the caste system and the joint family, matters of purity and penance, customary law, widow-burning and witchcraft. As such, the Mulukī Ain is a unique source not only for the political, social and economic life of 19th-century Nepal, but also for the place of traditional Hindu jurisprudence in South Asian legal cultures.

Widely regarded as a major Australian artist, Rosalie Gascoigne first exhibited in 1974 at the age of fifty-seven. She rapidly achieved critical acclaim for her assemblages which were her response to the Monaro landscape surrounding Canberra. The great blonde paddocks, vast skies and big raucous birds contrasted with the familiar lush green harbour city of Auckland she had left behind. Her medium: weathered discards from the landscape. By her death in 1999, her work had been purchased for major public art collections in Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and New York, and had been exhibited across Europe and Asia. Gascoigne's story is often cast in simple terms—an inspirational tale of an older woman 'finding herself’ later in life and gaining artistic acclaim. But the reality is much more complex and contingent. This biography explores Gascoigne’s achievement of her ‘own sort of heaven’ through the frame of the narrative she told once she had gained fame, using a series of interviews she gave from 1980 to 1998. It revolves around her frequently stated sense of feeling an outsider, her belief that artists are born not made, and other factors central to the development and impact of her work. Migrating to Australia from New Zealand in 1943, Gascoigne experienced the dramatic social changes of the 1960s and 1970s and benefited from the growth of cultural life in Canberra, a developing Australian art industry, and changing conceptions of aesthetic beauty.

Visando contribuir com o debate sobre a violência no futebol, nesta abordagem, optamos pelo viés da compreensão em lugar da visão estigmatizante e preconceituosa sobre o tema. Defendemos que reduzir a discussão da vio­lência no futebol meramente à ação das torcidas organizadas frag­menta a análise desse complexo fenômeno e se mostra improdutivo, pois a violência no futebol perpassa a organização, gestão e estrutura do futebol brasileiro, além dos episódios de violência física.

As the world enters a new year, the Covid-19 pandemic is still upsetting our daily lives. And as 75% of EU citizens live in urban areas, cities are the most prominent stage both for responding to the health crisis, and for seizing opportunities to recover and move forward. Meanwhile, in 2020, EU countries agreed to Next Generation EU, a €750 billion recovery package that represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity. This report argues that cities should be given more say over how post-pandemic national recovery plans pan out between here and 2026, when all projects are supposed to be wrapping up. Indeed, the success of the EU recovery plans will hinge upon what cities do, or they don’t do over the next five years. How are cities rethinking their role within the “twin” green and digital transitions? How can they achieve gender parity, reduce inequalities, and preserve a vibrant cultural life?

Originally published in 1974. In her study of primary materials in England and the United States, Schwoerer traces the origin, development, and articulation in both Parliament and in the popular press of the attitude opposing standing armies in seventeenth-century England and the American colonies. Central to the criticism of armies at that time was the conviction that ultimate military power should be vested in Parliament, not the Crown. Schwoerer shows how the many diverse elements of England's antimilitarism, including political principle, propaganda, parliamentary tactics, parochialism, and partisanship, hardened with every confrontation between the Crown or Protector and Parliament. The author finds a general predisposition to distrust professional soldiers early in the century, and from the 1620s onward she notes opposition to a standing army in times of peace. Highlighting the growth of the antimilitary tradition, Schwoerer traces the development of this attitude from the Petition of Right in 1628 to the 1641–1642 crisis over the Militia Bill/Ordinance, the military settlements of 1660 and 1689, and the climactic events of 1667–1699. Schwoerer shows how the anti-standing-army ideology affected the constitutional thinking of the American colonists and manifested itself in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. She addresses timeless questions of how to provide for a nation's defense while preserving individual liberty, citizen responsibility for military service, and the relationship of executive and legislative authority over the army.

Gottfried Dietrich Wilhelm Berthold (1854-1937) was one the foremost botanists and phycologists at the end of the 19th century. Born and educated in Westphalia, he enrolled at the Georgia Augusta to study plant sciences and focused on algae. After research stays at the Zoological Station at Naples he succeeded his mentor Johannes Reinke on his chair at the Institute of Plant Physiology at the Georgia Augusta Göttingen until 1923. In this study we focus on the biography of Berthold, his private and scientific life, interaction with J. Reinke and other topics related to the life of Berthold. In a second part we highlight his research on algae at the Gulf of Naples. We conclude with an evaluation of his scientific work in the light of the different phases in his life including a full bibliography of his scientific publications. Our study contributes to history of science at the Georgia Augusta.

The gaseous molecule ethylene (C2H4), which is small in size and simple in structure, is a plant hormone most often associated with fruit ripening yet has a diversity of effects throughout the plant life cycle. While its agricultural effects were known even in ancient Egypt, the complexity of its mode of action and the broad spectrum of its effects and potential uses in plant physiology remain important scientific challenges today. In the last few decades, the biochemical pathway of ethylene production has been uncovered, ethylene perception and signaling have been molecularly dissected, ethylene-responsive transcription factors have been identified and numerous effects of ethylene have been described, ranging from water stress, development, senescence, reproduction plant-pathogen interactions, and of course, ripening. Thus ethylene is involved in plant development, in biotic and abiotic stress, and in reproduction. There is no stage in plant life that is not affected by ethylene, modulated by a complex and fascinating molecular machinery.

Viktor Franz Freiherr von Andrian-Werburg (1813-1858) was and still is primarily known as the author of Österreich und dessen Zukunft, the most important programmatic brochure of the estatist opposition in the late Vormärz. But it is almost unknown, that he kept a diary for most of his adult life. These diaries are now presented in a scholarly edition.Between the first entry of 20 October 1839 and the last surviving entry of 10 March 1858 lie 19 years which transformed Andrian from a young subordinate public servant in Northern Italy, Istria and Vienna to the idol of the Vormärz opposition, from a respected member and vice-president of the National Assembly in Frankfurt and German envoy in London to the proscribed demolisher of the pre-revolutionary paradise, from the advisor of the Austrian politicians in the years past 1849 to the member of the boards of capitalist railway companies in the 1850s. Throughout this whole time, Andrian saw himself as an unrecognized genius who could have rescued society from the oppression and stagnancy of the Vormärz and from the chaos of the revolution and lead it towards a better future. During all these years, the diaries show a mixture of private and public events. Reflections on family, friends, and personal developments are blended with statements and reflections on politics and policy and Andrian's own role in public life. While focus and denseness of the entries change along with Andrian's private and political situation, at center stage is always the interest in the developments in Austria and her future constitution in close connection with his personal conditions. It is this interaction between public interest and private experience that make the Andrian diaries one of the most impressive private sources on Austrian history from the Vormärz through the revolutionary years of 1848/49 well into the last years of the Neoabsolutism.Narratives about financial problems and strategies for a solution, for example through a rich marriage, alternate with analyses of internal and foreign politics and plans on the re-creation of Austria. Phases of active political involvement change with periods of voluntary and enforced retreat. Therefore, there are entries on discussions with leading politicians and court dignitaries and on audiences with Emperor Francis Joseph as well as accounts of journeys from Helgoland to Rome, from the French Atlantic coast to the South of Egypt. But the central aspect is always the interplay between private experience and public influence.Viktor Andrian felt to be a born leader, not a subordinate, and believed that he could wait for the moment when he was called to lead. Therefore he remained, with the exception of the revolutionary period of 1848/49 when he got actively involved in politics, an observer, adviser and critic at the fringes, waiting for the moment when the reins of power would fall to him. Although he realized in his later years that this was an illusion, Andrian was complacent with his personal development: "Thank God, I never had to blame myself for wicked, vicious things."This edition in three volumes contains the annotated diary entries, an introduction on Viktor Andrian's life and works, an account of the history of the diaries, and, for the first time, a complete listing of Andrian's publications. Numerous excerpts from Andrian's preserved correspondence in the commentary complement and broaden the diaries. An annotated index refers to more than 2.800 persons mentioned in the entries.

Viktor Franz Freiherr von Andrian-Werburg (1813-1858) war und ist vor allem als Autor der bedeutendsten Programmschrift der ständischen Opposition des späten Vormärz, Österreich und dessen Zukunft bekannt. Kaum bekannt ist, dass er Zeit seines erwachsenen Lebens Tagebuch geführt hat. Nunmehr liegen seine gesamten erhaltenen Tagebücher in einer wissenschaftlichen Edition vor. Zwischen dem ersten Eintrag vom 20. Oktober 1839 bis zum letzten erhaltenen Eintrag liegen 19 Jahre, die Andrian vom jungen subalternen Beamten in Norditalien, Istrien und Wien zum Idol der vormärzlichen Opposition, vom geachteten Abgeordneten und Vizepräsidenten der Frankfurter Nationalversammlung und deutschen Reichsgesandten in London zum geächteten Zerstörer des vorrevolutionären Paradieses, vom Berater österreichischer Politiker der Jahre nach 1849 zum Verwaltungsrat kapitalistischer Eisenbahngesellschaften der 1850er Jahre machten. Dabei sah sich Andrian als verkanntes Genie, das es in der Hand gehabt hätte, die Gesellschaft aus der Unterdrückung und dem Stillstand des Vormärz und dem Chaos der Revolution in eine bessere Zukunft zu führen. Während all dieser Jahre vermischen sich in den Tagebüchern private und öffentliche Ereignisse, Reflexionen über familiäre und freundschaftliche Verhältnisse und persönliche Entwicklungen mit politischen Aussagen und Betrachtungen über die eigene Rolle im öffentlichen Leben. Die Schwerpunkte und die Dichte der Einträge verändern sich je nach Andrians Lebenslage. Als Konstante bleibt aber das unmittelbare Interesse an der Entwicklung Österreichs und seiner zukünftigen Gestaltung in direkter Verbindung mit der eigenen Situation. Diese Wechselwirkung von öffentlichem Interesse mit persönlichem Erleben machen die Tagebücher so zu einer der eindrucksvollsten privaten Quellen zur österreichischen Geschichte vom Vormärz über die Revolution von 1848/49 bis zur Spätphase des Neoabsolutismus.Schilderungen von finanziellen Problemen und Strategien zu ihrer Lösung, etwa durch eine reiche Heirat, wechseln mit Analysen der innen- und außenpolitischen Verhältnisse und Plänen zur Neugestaltung Österreichs. Phasen aktiven politischen Gestaltens wechseln mit Zeiten freiwilliger und erzwungener Zurückgezogenheit. Daher finden sich Einträge über Diskussionen mit führenden Politikern und höchsten Würdenträgern des Hofes bis hin zu Audienzen beim Kaiser ebenso wie Berichte von Reisen von Helgoland bis Rom und von der französischen Atlantikküste bis in den Süden Ägyptens. Zentral bleibt dabei immer das Wechselspiel zwischen privatem Erleben und öffentlicher Einflussnahme.Viktor von Andrian fühlte sich zum Führer, nicht zum Untergebenen berufen und meinte, auf jenen Zeitpunkt warten zu können, an dem man ihn rufen müsste. So blieb er mit Ausnahme des Jahres 1848, als er für kurze Zeit aktiv in das politische Geschehen eingriff, ein Beobachter, Ratgeber und Kritiker von außen, der auf den richtigen Zeitpunkt wartete, an dem ihm die Zügel der Macht zufallen sollten. Obwohl er sich in seinen letzten Lebensjahren bewusst war, dass es sich hierbei um eine Illusion handelte, war Andrian mit dem Verlauf seiner persönlichen Entwicklung zufrieden: "Schlechtes, Gemeines habe ich Gottlob mir nie vorzuwerfen gehabt."Die dreibändige Edition enthält neben dem kommentierten Text der Tagebücher eine Einleitung zu Leben und Werk Viktor von Andrians, eine Darstellung der Überlieferung der Tagebücher sowie erstmals ein exaktes Werkverzeichnis Andrians. Ergänzt und erweitert wird das Tagebuch durch zahlreiche Auszüge aus seinem erhaltenen Briefwechsel im Kommentar. Erschlossen ist die Edition durch ein kommentiertes Personenregister mit über 2.800 Einträgen.

Am Beispiel der gescheiterten Bemühungen, in Europa einen einheitlichen Farbfernsehstandard auszuhandeln, thematisiert diese interdisziplinär angelegte Studie die Komplexität internationaler Standardisierungsprozesse. Gleichzeitig leistet sie einen innovativen Beitrag zu einer politischen Kulturgeschichte der Technik. Technik wird als historisch gewachsene, sozial konstruierte und symbolisch aufgeladene Kulturleistung verstanden. Der historische Vergleich zwischen den beiden Hauptakteuren der Farbfernsehkontroverse Mitte der sechziger Jahre bietet einen erfrischenden Blick auf die Geschichte der deutsch-französischen Beziehungen im Kontext europäischer Technikentwicklung.
