How to teach a computer? You can either write a fixed program – or you can enable the computer to learn on its own. Living beings do not have any programmer writing a program for developing their skills, which then only has to be executed. They learn by themselves – without the previous knowledge from external impressions – and thus can solve problems better than any computer today. What qualities are needed to achieve such a behavior for devices like computers? Can such cognition be adapted from biology? History, development, decline and resurgence of a wide approach to solve problems.

Originally, this work has been prepared in the framework of a seminar of the University of Bonn in Germany, but it has been and will be extended. First and foremost, to provide a comprehensive overview of the subject of neural networks.

Such movement raises questions about the nature of therapeutic citizenship, how and where structurally vulnerable populations obtain care, and the political geography of blame associated with this disease. This volume brings together cutting-edge anthropological research carried out across North and South America, Europe, Africa and Asia, representing low-, middle- and high-resource countries with a diversity of national health care systems. Contributors ethnographically map the varied nature of cancer experiences and articulate the multiplicity of meanings that survivorship, risk, charity and care entail. They explore institutional frameworks shaping local responses to cancer and underlying political forces and structural variables that frame individual experiences. Of particular concern is the need to interrogate underlying assumptions of research designs that may lead to the naturalizing of hidden agendas or intentions. Running throughout the chapters, moreover, are considerations of moral and ethical issues related to cancer treatment and research. Thematic emphases include the importance of local biologies in the framing of cancer diagnosis and treatment protocols, uncertainty and ambiguity in definitions of biosociality, shifting definitions of patienthood, and the sociality of care and support.

This book is an introduction to the language and standard proof methods of mathematics. It is a bridge from the computational courses (such as calculus or differential equations) that students typically encounter in their first year of college to a more abstract outlook. It lays a foundation for more theoretical courses such as topology, analysis and abstract algebra. Although it may be more meaningful to the student who has had some calculus, there is really no prerequisite other than a measure of mathematical maturity. Topics include sets, logic, counting, methods of conditional and non-conditional proof, disproof, induction, relations, functions and infinite cardinality.

Lebende Wesen haben keinen Programmierer, der ihnen ein Programm für ihre Fähigkeiten schreibt, welches nur ausgeführt werden muss. Sie lernen – ohne Vorkenntnisse durch Eindrücke von außen – selber und kommen damit zu besseren Problemlösungen als jeder heutige Computer. Kann man solches Verhalten auch bei Maschinen wie Computern erreichen? Können wir solche Kognition von der Biologie adaptieren? Geschichte, Entwicklung, Niedergang und Wiederauferstehung eines großen Ansatzes, Probleme zu lösen. 

Diese Arbeit ist ursprünglich im Rahmen eines Seminars der Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn entstanden, wurde und wird jedoch immer mehr erweitert – erstens, um mit der Zeit einen möglichst guten Überblick über das Thema der Neuronalen Netze liefern zu können und zweitens schlicht und einfach.

What happens when UNESCO heritage conventions are ratified by a state? How do UNESCO’s global efforts interact with preexisting local, regional and state efforts to conserve or promote culture? What new institutions emerge to address the mandate? The contributors to this volume focus on the work of translation and interpretation that ensues once heritage conventions are ratified and implemented. With seventeen case studies from Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and China, the volume provides comparative evidence for the divergent heritage regimes generated in states that differ in history and political organization. The cases illustrate how UNESCO’s aspiration to honor and celebrate cultural diversity diversifies itself. The very effort to adopt a global heritage regime forces myriad adaptations to particular state and interstate modalities of building and managing heritage.

The quest for a deeper meaning of research support is advanced on the principle that librarians need to make the paradigm shift away from reactive ‘disseminators’ of information to proactive partners in the research and teaching and learning processes. The expansion of the suite of research support services such as bibliometrics, systematic reviews, data management, digital preservation and curation, Open Access and open access publishing have moved the librarian from the periphery to the epicenter of research support. This transition is viewed by many as revolutionary in terms of support for research production at high education, as the librarians engage the principle of being a research partner or collaborator.
