It looks at these issues by examining the impact of the Rio Declaration and assesses the extent to which it has made a difference. Consuming Cities examines this impact using case studies from around the world including: the USA, Japan, Germany, the UK, China, India, Sweden, Poland, Australia and Indonesia The contributors all have direct experience of the urban environment and urban policies in the countries on which they write and offer an authoritative commentary which brings the urban 'consumption' dimension of sustainable development into focus.

The contributions of this book are the results of a conference of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in March 2011. The underlying consideration was simple: In language teaching and cultural studies, media are essential - why not resort to historical sources? They can be used in many ways, have a high recognition value and offer innumerable points of contact to the topics of regional and media studies. First, relevant experts present the most important collections and portals on the Internet and enter into the question of the informative and practical value of historical sources. The second part deals in a more detailed manner with aural sources, movies, political cartoons and posters as well as street names and texts of worker literature.

Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes gehen auf eine Fachtagung des Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienstes (DAAD) im März 2011 zurück. Ihr lag eine simple Überlegung zugrunde: Im Sprach- und Landeskundeunterricht sind Medien unerlässlich – warum nicht auf historische Quellen zurückgreifen? Sie sind vielseitig einsetzbar, haben einen hohen Wiedererkennungswert und bieten unzählige Anknüpfungspunkte an landeskundliche und medienwissenschaftliche Themen. Based on an extensive range of primary sources - whether they be archival, journalistic or documentary - some of which are exposed here for the first time, the present volume reviews the efforts made by the State of Israel to obtain reparations from Germany after the Holocaust, as well as the unprecedented storm which this issue caused among Israeli Jews. On 2.2.2023 the 2nd International Conference “Management, Technology and Sport” was held at the Faculty of Sports Studies of Masaryk University in Brno in cooperation with the Czech Management Association. The conference was opened by the Minister of Science, Research and Innovation Mgr. Helena Langšádlová and the President of the Czech Management Association Ing. Olga Girstlová, Ph.D. Innovative contributions at the conference covered a wide range of management issues (organization of a major sporting event and the impact of covid on spectator attendance), economics (aspects of budgeting of sports teams taking into account the crisis situation or the economic concept of willingness to pay in the sporting environment), technology (relationships between communication, technology and management models, e-sport). Title in English: Musica viva in schola XXVIII. Stem cell research is one of the fascinating areas of contemporary biology, but, as with many expanding fields of scientific inquiry, research on stem cells raises scientific questions as rapidly as it generates discoveries. Research on stem cell treatment continues to advance knowledge about how an organism develops from a single cell and how healthy cells replace damaged cells in adult organisms. The most important potential application of human stem cells is the generation of cells and tissues that could be used for cell-based therapies, especially oncology. The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara, collaborated with the center of excellence and innovation (Pusat Unggulan Inovasi /PUI). The Stem Cell center of the Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) organized an International Conference. The International Stem Cell and Oncology Conference (ISCOC) 2017 was an comprehensive academic conference in the field of stem cell and oncology research and also tropical medicine and related scientific topics. We expect this conference will benefit academics and practitioners in the field of health sciences in Indonesia. During the two day conference, researchers presented the most recent discoveries in stem cell and oncology and also general medical topics, and served as well in establishing networking for joint researchers and collaboration among participants. In the early hours of April 22, 1914, American President Woodrow Wilson sent Marines to seize the port of Veracruz in an attempt to alter the course of the Mexican Revolution. As a result, the United States seemed on the brink of war with Mexico. An international uproar ensued. The governments of Argentina, Brazil, and Chile offered to mediate a peaceful resolution to the crisis. Surprisingly, both the United States and Mexico accepted their offer and all parties agreed to meet at an international peace conference in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

For Canadians, the conference provided an unexpected spectacle on their doorstep, combining high diplomacy and low intrigue around the gardens and cataracts of Canada's most famous natural attraction. For the diplomats involved, it proved to be an ephemeral high point in the nascent pan-American movement. After it ended, the conference dropped out of historical memory.

This is the first full account of the Niagara Falls Peace Conference to be published in North America since 1914. The author carefully reconstructs what happened at Niagara Falls, examining its historical significance for Canada's relationship with the Americas. From this almost forgotten event he draws important lessons on the conduct of international mediation and the perils of middle-power diplomacy.

A new examination of the International Criminal Court (ICC) from a political science and international relations perspective. It describes the main features of the court and discusses the political negotiations and the on-going clashes between those states who oppose the court, particularly the United States, and those who defend it. It also makes these issues accessible to non-lawyers and presents effective advocacy strategies for non-governmental organizations. It also delivers essential background to the place of the US in international relations and makes a major contribution to thinking about the ICC’s future. While global civil society does not deliver global democracy, it does contribute to more transparent, more deliberative and more ethical international decision-making which is ultimately preferable to a world of isolated sovereign states with no accountability outside their borders, or exclusive and secretive state-to-state diplomacy. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of international relations, international law, globalization and global governance.
