Animal Narratology interrogates what it means to narrate, to speak—speak for, on behalf of—and to voice, or represent life beyond the human, which is in itself as different as insects, bears, and dogs are from each other, and yet more, as individual as a single mouse, horse, or puma. The varied contributions to this interdisciplinary Special Issue highlight assumptions about the human perception of, attitude toward, and responsibility for the animals that are read and written about, thus demonstrating that just as “the animal” does not exist, neither does “the human”. In their zoopoetic focus, the analyses are aware that animal narratology ultimately always contains an approximation of an animal perspective in human terms and terminology, yet they make clear that what matters is how the animal is approximated and that there is an effort to approach and encounter the non-human in the first place. Many of the analyses come to the conclusion that literary animals give readers the opportunity to expand their own points of view both on themselves and others by adopting another’s perspective to the degree that such an endeavor is possible. Ultimately, the contributions call for a recognition of the many spaces, moments, and modes in which human lives are entangled with those of animals—one of which is located within the creative bounds of storytelling.

'Biopunk Dystopias' contends that we find ourselves at a historical nexus, defined by the rise of biology as the driving force of scientific progress, a strongly grown mainstream attention given to genetic engineering in the wake of the Human Genome Project (1990-2003), the changing sociological view of a liquid modern society, and shifting discourses on the posthuman, including a critical posthumanism that decenters the privileged subject of humanism. The book argues that this historical nexus produces a specific cultural formation in the form of "biopunk", a subgenre evolved from the cyberpunk of the 1980s. Biopunk makes use of current posthumanist conceptions in order to criticize contemporary reality as already dystopian, warning that a future will only get worse, and that society needs to reverse its path, or else destroy all life on this planet.

Birth and death are both profound life transitions, revealing deeply existential, social, and spiritual questions in addition to various forms of ritual and ritualizing. While birth and death are often seen as opposites, this edited volume shows that the start and end of life share many ambiguities. They represent a beginning and an end, and lead to ritualizing as well as embodied forms of spirituality. Throughout the book, the authors discuss theoretical and empirical perspectives on rituals at birth and death from multidisciplinary perspectives, such as religious studies, anthropology, philosophy, and sociology. By doing so, they shed light on new forms of ritualizing, as well as on traditional rituals.

Alongside analysing the oldest records of Roman inscriptions of Austria, this work particularly emphasizes the antiquarian-epigraphic collecting activity which can be noted in the area of Austria as a consequence of the spreading humanistic attitude. It focuses on the question, whether Augustinus Prygl Tyfernus is actually to be identified as the so-called „Antiquus Austriacus” as has been pleaded repeatedly. The examination of a number of relevant known and hitherto extensively unknown copies shows that the “Antiquus-Austriacus-Collection“ is not a homogeneous compilation by a single “auctor antiquissimus” but rather an anthology derived from different copies of varying quality, collected by Johannes Fuchsmagen.

Neben den ältesten Abschriften norischer Inschriften richtet sich der Blick vor allem auf die antiquarisch-epigraphische Sammeltätigkeit, die mit der Verbreitung humanistischen Gedankengutes auch im österreichischen Raum einsetzt. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt der Frage, ob der sogenannte „Antiquus Austriacus“ tatsächlich mit Augustinus Prygl Tyfernus zu identifizieren ist, wofür bisher mehrfach plädiert worden ist. Durch die detaillierte Untersuchung und Gegenüberstellung bereits bekannter Sammlungen sowie bisher kaum beachteter Handschriften zeigt sich schließlich, dass es sich bei der „Antiquus-Austriacus-Sammlung“ nicht um eine homogene Zusammenstellung eines einzigen „auctor antiquissimus“ handelt, sondern um ein Produkt aus unterschiedlichen Abschriften, hinter dem sich die Sammeltätigkeit von Johannes Fuchsmagen verbirgt.

This volume presents a critical edition of the register of the Faculty of Law at the University of Vienna between 1442 and 1557. The book deals with the epistolary of Damião de Góis from the perspective of the rhetorical constitution of his public prestige and the representation of his auctoritas, evaluating the dimension of the social relations that he established from his stay in Flanders in the service of the crown until his return to Portugal, around two decades later (1525-1545). During this period, we investigate how he could have developed the technical aspects of his epistolary writing, as well as its uses in the interaction with important dignitaries and men of letters of his time. It is demonstrated that his public image varied according to the specific circumstances in which he acted. Representing himself as the obsequious interpreter of the overseas deeds of his kingdom, the persuasive diplomat ready to interfere in the literary and religious quarrels of the time, and as the expert capable of presenting himself as a scholar worthy of imitation and future emulation, Góis sought to intertwine the praise of the crown to the recognition of his own prestige, hoping thereby to tie his destiny to the immortality then providentially associated with the Portuguese kingdom.

In 1550, the theological notion of “scandal” was put forward in Calvin’s treatise Concerning Scandals. The reformer invited his coreligionists not to be afraid of scandal and not to concern themselves with fama. Focusing on the notion of scandal, the present study demonstrates the role of reputation in interdenominational conflicts. The Protestant-Catholic conflicts become a battle of conflicting memories. As Catholics and Protestants fight to impose their own narratives, it impacts the writing of history. Scandal, thus, is crucial on both sides; it constitutes a polemical tool in a war fought with the pen and the press where libels are tearing apart the nascent ‘public space’. Following its theological making, the legal making of scandal then gradually allows the monarchy to regain control of its torn ‘public space’. This book thus analyses the emerging of scandal in its modern understanding: an event constructed as a narrative through media coverage for political purposes, which brings into crisis the common basic standards and values of a society due to the transgressive nature ofthe acts or words it accounts for.

»Humanismus« gehört zu den wirkmächtigsten Begriffen politischer, religiöser und philosophischer Debatten in Geschichte und Gegenwart. Dabei wird der Begriff gleichermaßen historiographisch und normativ verwendet und dient sowohl der Positionierung in weltanschaulichen Konflikten als auch der Zementierung eines Deutungsanspruchs in globalhistorischen Diskursen. Friedemann Stengel thematisiert »Humanismus« in seiner Polyvalenz und eindeutigen Widersprüchlichkeit. Dazu konfrontiert er heutige Definitionen mit den historischen Kontexten vom 15. bis ins späte 19. Jahrhundert und zeigt die historiographische Unmöglichkeit des Begriffs auf. Darüber hinaus entwickelt er in Anknüpfung an diskurstheoretische Einsichten Anregungen für einen neuen Umgang mit »Humanismus« insgesamt.

The rebirth of Ancient Greek in Europe was promoted by Humanist education and ideas to such an extent that we can consider the Greek language as a formative element of Humanist culture. Next to Latin, the default common language, a Humanist has to know and use Greek, because he is not, cannot and will not be a barbarian: barbaros ou pelomai, as Julius Caesar Scaliger claimed in his verses in 1600. Wreaths (stephanoi) have been the symbols of the cult of Muses from ancient times. After the love for Greek Muses had been revived by Renaissance Humanist poets and scholars, it has remained with us both in poetic activity and in scholarship. The Hellenostephanos volume presents a collection of papers by scholars who study Humanist Greek, aspiring towards another revival of Hellenism, and trying to avoid being barbarians. The court of Duke Louis IX of Bavaria-Landshut (reigned 1450-1479) was one of the most influential and dazzling courts of its time. Not least because of the Landshut wedding in 1475, it is still known today. Against the backdrop of humanist discourses, this book analyses selected architecture and works of art that were created at the court of Louis IX and in his circle. The focus of the analysis is on the transfer of these discourses and their artistic realisation. Using the example of the three core themes of humanism – the discovery of the individual, landscape, and history – it is shown how humanist discourses travelled from the university towns of northern Italy to Landshut through so-called learned councils and were reflected in art there.

Medical practice is a mixture of science and art, technique and humanism. The importance of human beings is more obvious in medicine than in any other field. At the center of medical care is the patient, and at its base and that of the entire medical system is the relationship that is established between the patient and the medical staff. Overspecialization is a big component of modern medicine, with professionals working in increasingly narrow fields, which makes patients routinely treated by multidisciplinary teams. This draws attention to the importance of appropriate relationships between members of the medical team for the success of the therapeutic approach. In the context of technological progress in medicine, the need to relate to the humanistic values of the medical profession and the complexity of the medical act in which technical aspects are intertwined with cultural, ethical, legal, psychological, and sociological issues becomes increasingly clear. This Special Issue is dedicated to the humanistic values of medical practice. It includes articles that approach various aspects of the so-called humanistic medicine, drawing a picture of what contemporary medicine should strive for.

Scritta a cavaliere fra Due e Trecento e collocabile sul crinale fra la prosa “media” e quella “d’arte”, l’Istorietta troiana, versione anonima e parziale della terza redazione in prosa del fluviale Roman de Troie di Benoît de Sainte-Maure (ca. 1165), narra, con pregnanza emotiva e concisione stilistica, una parte di quella vicenda che s’era venuta costituendo nel Medioevo latino fondendo le storie di Darete Frigio e di Ditti Cretese e rivitalizzandole, nel mondo francese, alla luce della sensibilità del secolo XII. Le suggestioni del mito classico, filtrate da un tipico atteggiamento attualizzante, lasciano trapelare l’aspirazione a ideali di bellezza (Elena), di forza (Achille, Ettore) e di cortesia (la città di Troia) capaci di attirare un pubblico comunale che aspira a un’elevazione educativa e culturale. La filigrana stilnovista e la fine tessitura ritmica fanno, dell’Istorietta troiana, un gioiello ascrivibile, ante litteram, al genere del poème en prose.

La via del conocimiento de la filosofía natural contrarreformista estuvo condicionada por la necesidad de conciliar el método escolástico con el experimental, a la luz de la evidencia de los nuevos descubrimientos científicos y geográficos. La cosmovisión oficial hizo uso de metodologías del saber, basadas en discursos como el antisupersticioso, en el que se apuntaba a la confluencia de métodos experimentales, religiosos y jurídicos, orientados hacia una interpretación más precisa de la realidad. En La ciencia de Cervantes. se confirma cómo en pasajes que describen exorcismos, interacciones entre animales y seres humanos y exploraciones geográficas de obras cervantinas, como Don Quijote., Persiles y Sigismunda. y las Novelas ejemplares., la confluencia de visiones artísticas y científicas de la época se pone de manifiesto. Llama la atención, especialmente, el caso del Coloquio de los perros., en donde se evidencia un intento de conciliar el conocimiento humanista, escolástico, antisupersticioso y barroco, en línea con otras excepcionales obras neoplatónicas similares, como son tanto el Somnium. de Maldonado como el de Kepler. The Counter-reformation path to natural philosophy was increasingly conditioned by its need to reconciliate the scholastic method with the experimental one, at the light of the evidence of new scientific and geographic discoveries. Official world-view was supported by approaches to knowledge such as the anti-superstitious discourse, which were sustained by the confluence of experimental, religious and legal methodologies, in support of a more accurate interpretation of reality. La ciencia de Cervantes. shows how selected cervantine texts, including the Quixote., Persiles and Sigismunda., and the Exemplary Novels., reflect how the confluence of artistic and scientific views of the period was evidenced in the depiction, among others, of exorcisms, animal-human interactions and geographical explorations. Particularly relevant is the case of the Colloquy of the Dogs., showing an attempt to reconciliate the conflictive confluence of Humanistic, Scholastic, anti-superstitious and baroque knowledge, in line with other unique Neoplatonist works, such as Maldonado’s and Kepler’s Somnium.

Im Anschluss daran entfaltet er die Idee einer gottlosen Ontotheologie eines existenzialen personalistischen Humanismus, den er mit Verweis auf Paul Tillich und Romano Guardini zugleich gegen jeden Übergriff einer autoritären Theo-Dogmatik supranaturalistischer Art verteidigt.

The French Society of Urban History, convinced of the relevance of the geohistoric approach to question the urban fact, dedicated its 2020 annual congress, in Bordeaux, to the status and roles of the city in atlas productions. This work represents the publication of eight of the congress contributions. In its standard meaning, the atlas is a compilation that combines in a universal perspective, cartographic productions and textual commentaries. It is over the long term, from humanist productions to digital humanities and according to all meanings of the term that the authors questioned, through the prism of the city, the ambitions and practices of this singular mode of representation. Why and how to transplant the city into an atlas? How efficient is the tool in the geohistorical approach to the city? The collected contributions analyze atlases from a dual perspective: the first considers the atlas as a tool for reasoning about the city, used since the Renaissance and mainly motivated by political and military logic ; the second, based on contemporary experiences, observes the urban historian as a producer of atlases.

Sound-Worlds of Central Europe explores the sound-world of early modern Silesia via the writings of humanists active there in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries who both observed musical culture and actively participated in it: a poet, a publisher, a pedagogue, a physician, a historian, and a regionalist. Such an approach makes it possible to reconstruct their perceptions and understandings of music—a constitutive element of this community. As these authors concentrated more on the representation of music than the art itself, the book reflects the collective memory of the republic of scholars: their individual and common imaginarium.

Vladimir Nabokov described the literature course he taught at Cornell as ""a kind of detective investigation of the mystery of literary structures."" Leona Toker here pursues a similar investigation of the enigmatic structures of Nabokov's own fiction. According to Toker, most previous critics stressed either Nabokov’s concern with form or the humanistic side of his works, but rarely if ever the two together. In sensitive and revealing readings of ten novels, Toker demonstrates that the need to reconcile the human element with aesthetic or metaphysical pursuits is a constant theme of Nabokov’s and that the tension between technique and content is itself a key to his fiction. Written with verve and precision, Toker’s book begins with Pnin and follows the circular pattern that is one of her subject’s own favored devices.

In Ontological Terror Calvin L. Warren intervenes in Afro-pessimism, Heideggerian metaphysics, and black humanist philosophy by positing that the "Negro question" is intimately imbricated with questions of Being. Warren uses the figure of the antebellum free black as a philosophical paradigm for thinking through the tensions between blackness and Being. He illustrates how blacks embody a metaphysical nothing. This nothingness serves as a destabilizing presence and force as well as that which whiteness defines itself against. Thus, the function of blackness as giving form to nothing presents a terrifying problem for whites: they need blacks to affirm their existence, even as they despise the nothingness they represent. By pointing out how all humanism is based on investing blackness with nonbeing—a logic which reproduces antiblack violence and precludes any realization of equality, justice, and recognition for blacks—Warren urges the removal of the human from its metaphysical pedestal and the exploration of ways of existing that are not predicated on a grounding in being.

Petrus Ramus, latinized Petrus Ramus (1515-1572), was a French thinker who decisively contributed to the transition from Humanism to Rationalism. His role in the history of law was confusing and the main objective of this book is to attempt a clarification of his work and the influence in the jurists that followed his ideas. Rafael Ramis Barceló reviews the history and proposes a new way to understand the work of Ramus, rereading his work, dividing it into periods and analyzing his influence on the jurists, from Bodin to Leibniz and Thomasius.---Pierre de la Ramée, latinizado Petrus Ramus (1515-1572), fue un pensador francés que contribuyó decisivamente a la transición desde el humanismo al racionalismo. During the most recent conference of the Renaissance Society of America, two sessions were devoted entirely to the Renaissance in Poland. In fifty-nine editions of what is considered the most prestigious international appointment for experts of Renaissance culture, this is the first time that characteristic features of sixteenth-century Poland were the subject of analysis and debate. The interest generated at the conference and the academic value of the contributions convinced the organisers of the panels to ask the speakers to develop and revise their contributions to conform with the conventions of the academic article. The result is a selection of essays that pursue specific pathways in exploring the cultural factors that affected the Renaissance in Poland: influences and originality in Polish literary and artistic production, orthodoxy and dissidence, the circulation of thought and reflection on the Res Publica in the spheres of both politics and philosophy. Adopting a distinctly interdisciplinary approach, the aim of this publication is to focus certain aspects of the Polish Renaissance and the cultural identity of sixteenth-century Poland in relation to the European context.

The aim of this book is to reflect on the complex practice of responsibility within the context of a globalised world and contemporary means of action. Levinas' exploration of the ethical serves as point of entry and is shown to be seeking inter-cultural political relevance through engagement with the issues of postcoloniality and humanism. Yet, Levinas fails to realise the ethical implications of the inevitable instrumental mediation between ethical meaning and political practice. With recourse to Weber, Apel and Ricoeur, Ernst Wolff proposes a theory of strategic co-responsibility for the uncertain global context of practice.

Pseudo-Proklos’ Sphaera ist eine griechische Einführung in die Astronomie, die ursprünglich von dem Stoiker Geminos aus dem 1. Jahrhundert v. Chr. stammt, jedoch im späten 15. Jahrhundert dem Neoplatoniker Proklos zugeschrieben wurde. Am Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts erschienen Übersetzungen und Kommentare des Textes in 23 Handschriften und 92 Druckausgaben verschiedener Sprachen. Obwohl zu dieser Zeit bekannt war, dass der Text nicht zu Proklos gehört, wurde er weiterhin in ganz Europa unterrichtet und übersetzt. Die weite Verbreitung des Textes unterstreicht nicht nur die Bekanntheit des Namens Proklos, sondern auch die große Bedeutung seines Inhalts. Dieses Buch kontrastiert die Sphaera des Pseudo-Proklos mit dem aus dem 13. Jahrhundert stammenden astronomischen Standardlehrbuch für Astronomie - der Sphaera des Johannes de Sacrobosco. Die Verwendung der Sphaera fand bevorzugt an europäischen Universitäten, Hochschulen und Schulen statt, weil sie kürzer und elementarer war als der Text des Sacrobosco und weil die einfache griechische Syntax auch zum Unter-richten der griechischen Sprache verwendet werden konnte. Als griechisches Lehrbuch wurde die Sphaera zusammen mit verschiedenen Textgattungen wie Abhandlungen und Gedichten zur Astronomie gedruckt und insbesondere in humanistischen Zentren um Erasmus und Melanchthon verbreitet. Diese Textausgabe von Pseudo-Proklos Sphaera enthält eine detaillierte Beschreibung des Inhalts, verfolgt ihre Verbreitung und stellt sie in einen zeitlichen Zusammenhang. Der Anhang enthält Transkriptionen und Facsimiles der ältesten griechischen Handschrift, des ältesten griechischen-lateinischen Druckes, eine deutsche Übersetzung des griechischen Textes und Paraphrasen der lateinischen frühneuzeitlichen Kommentare. Die Edition Open Sources (EOS) setzt ein neues Paradigma im Verlagswesen im Hin-blick auf wissenschaftliche Publikationen von Quellen um. Die herausgegebenen Werke sind in unterschiedlichen Formaten online frei zugänglich, und auch in gedruckter Form erhältlich. EOS-Publikationen behandeln wichtige Originalquellen zur Geschichte und Entwicklung des Wissens, die als Faksimile und bearbeitete Neuausgabe eines Textes, teilweise auch als Übersetzung bereitgestellt und mit einer Einführung in Autor, Werk und Entstehungszeit versehen werden. Bei den Quellen kann es sich um historische Bücher, Manuskripte, Dokumente oder andere Materialien handeln, die ansonsten schwer zugänglich sind. EOS ist eine Zusammenarbeit der University of Oklahoma Libraries, des Department for the History of Science der University of Oklahoma sowie des Max Planck-Instituts für Wissenschaftsgeschichte.

Two people who do not speak the same language meet. One writes the name of the other: a fugitive, timeless and banal scene. Only a modest written record remains. Thanks to it, however, we can, centuries later, re-experience the exact moment of this exchange. Sometimes the fugitively captured name will be the only vestige of completely extinct languages. For epigraphies of fragmentary attestation, understanding that it is a proper name, isolating it and deciphering it is in itself a first task. It is then necessary to analyze the treatment of this name in the language of reception, the required adaptations and retrace the context in which the object was written. With these few pieces, the background image of the cultural and linguistic puzzle of ancient societies is reconstituted. This book aims to constitute and leaf through the album of a dozen of these linguistic snapshots all around the ancient Mediterranean.

The Reformation was essentially a religious renewal of Christianity in Europe. As such, it has contributed decisively, along with the Renaissance and humanism, to the formation of a secular modernity. What exactly was this contribution and how is it to be assessed? Have Reformation movements destroyed the traditional unity of the church and the state, of society and culture, and in so doing instigated the marginalisation of Christianity in Europe? Or have they brought central impulses of Christianity to the fore, without which Western modernity could not developed, and which also characterise a society that understands itself as secular in a plural late modern era? The present volume attempts to shed light on these controversial questions. Criticisms levelled at reformed traditions by the secular modernism standpoint as well as those aimed at European modernity and late-modernity from the camp of reformed thinking are also given a voice.

Rudolph Agricola: Six Lives and Erasmus’s Testimonies The Frisian humanist Rudolph Agricola (1443-1485) is rightly famous for single-handedly bringing the Italian Renaissance to the North. Owing to his fascinating personality and many talents, he attracted the love and admiration of his contemporaries and the following generations. As a result, six biographies on Agricola have been preserved.The authors of these lives drew their materials from different sources and wrote their texts independently from each other. Differing vastly in rhetorical aims and methods, they provide us with a vivid image of cultural and intellectual life in the 15th century. Erasmus praised Agricola's work throughout his writings. No less than fifty testimonies from Erasmus and his correspondents are presented here. This edition of sources supplements the volume of Agricola's letters (BLN, 2002) and is preceded by an expert survey of all biographical information now at our disposal. Thus it fills a gap in our knowledge of a great man of letters, while correcting a number of persistent misconceptions (concerning the year of Agricola's birth, for instance).

Die Studie kommt zum Schluss, dass das Freidenkertum vom Wandel in seiner Umwelt profitiert, während es gleichsam darunter leidet. Is it the man who dispose of the technique or is the technique that the man has at his disposal? This is probably the fundamental question around which the reflection of this volume rolls around. Whilst much analysis of African philosophy focuses on humanistic traditions, this book argues that there is an alternative history of African philosophy based on understandings of the nonhuman, or "the world", from across the continent. The book starts with a precolonial Swahili poem which has reached across the continent with direct and indirect philosophical resonances and intellectual contiguity. Centring textual traditions in African languages, the book departs from philosophical topics drawn from European languages or world philosophy. Instead, the book demonstrates that locally constituted discourses have alternative philosophical orientations and interests, alternative intellectual histories in which the reception of the philosophical heritage passes through specific textual and linguistic channels. Interrogating texts in Swahili, Shona, Ndebele, Wolof, and Kinyarwanda, the book’s coverage ranges from classical poetry to existentialist and postmodern novels, to songs and post-conflict literature. Challenging humanist and Europhone African philosophical assumptions, this book is an important read for researchers of African philosophy, literature, languages, and cultural studies.

The process of secularization can be defined as a shift in the focus of European thought from the transcendent God, the otherworldly, and the suprahuman, towards immanence, that is, towards the world and the human condition in the world. Secularization represents a transition from theism to humanism. Given this definition, it is often concluded that secularization has led to the exclusion of God from thought and the removal of religion from society. Nevertheless, post-secular thought offers a more nuanced and sophisticated perspective. As postulated by numerous theorists, secularization was not a departure from theism and religion in general, but rather a departure from a specific conception of God and a particular mode of religiosity that had been dominant for an extended period. Most contributions to this volume identify the moments of secularization and humanism, not as the elimination of God but on the contrary as an opportunity that various thinkers recognized to liberate the divine from the constraints of hegemonic European theology and religiosity. This perspective suggests that secularization did not erase God but rather created an opportunity for the humanization of religion through ethical, social, or political activation. The papers in this volume take different approaches and offer different responses to the question of how the divine and the transcendent reappear in the discourse of humanism.

How people conceive of happiness reveals much about who they are and the values they hold dear. Drawing on ethnographic insights from diverse field sites around the world, this book offers a unique window onto the ways in which people grapple with fundamental questions about how to live and what it means to be human. Developing a distinctly anthropological approach concerned less with gauging how happy people are than with how happiness figures as an idea, mood, and motive in everyday life, the book explores how people strive to live well within challenging or even hostile circumstances. The contributors explore how happiness intersects with dominant social values as well as an array of aims and aspirations that are potentially conflicting, demonstrating that not every kind of happiness is seen as a worthwhile aim or evaluated in positive moral terms.

Published respectively in 1549 and 1560, the epistolary collections of Bernardo Tasso, father of Torquato of the same name and a renowned poet in his time, obey different logics and needs. The first is presented as a model for a wide public, with a clear desire to educate in good letters and morals. It includes a wide variety of epistolary typologies, and focuses on the turbulent history of the early 16th century. Tasso asserts himself as a chronicler and diplomat, while emphasising his stature as a mentor to a prince, anxious to appear as a paragon of professional and personal virtues. The second collection, on the other hand, responds to the desire to publish the exchanges linked to the development of his chivalric novel, Amadis, but is largely dependent on the Neapolitan events of 1547, which transformed this perfect secretary into a penniless courtier. The book thus partly traces the deterioration of Tasso’s relationship with his patron, Ferrante Sanseverino. Together with his denigration of the prince, material contingencies and the intrusion of everyday vocabulary contribute to distancing this collection from the previous one and to drawing a very different self-portrait of its author. The courtier with an exemplary cursus honorum gives way to a pugnacious intellectual aware of the power of his pen. The modus vivendi of 1549 collides with the reality of an ageing servant in adversity, while the modus scribendi of an ideal secretary is succeeded by a lexicon of the ordinary and sometimes of the sour.
