The integration of information from various sensory modalities influences behaviour. It can induce behavioural benefits such as faster reaction times and enhanced detection of noisy signals but may also produce illusions, all of which have been characterized by specific neuronal signatures. Yet, while these effects of multisensory integration are largely accepted, the role of attention in this process is still the object of intense debate. On the one hand, it has been suggested that attention may guide multisensory integration in a top-down fashion by selection of specific inputs to be integrated out of the plethora of information in our environment. On the other hand, there is evidence that integration could occur in a bottom-up manner, based on temporal and spatial correlations, and outside the focus of attention. An extreme example is the multisensory enhancement of neural responses in anesthetised animals. Attention itself is not a unitary construct, and may refer to a range of different selection mechanisms. Therefore, the interplay between attention and multisensory integration can take many forms which explain, in part, the diversity of findings and the disputes in the literature. The goal of this Research Topic is to help clarify the picture by trying to answer the following questions from various perspectives: Under which circumstances does multisensory integration take place without attention?, and, When does attention determine the fate of multisensory integration?

This open access book explores which audiovisual translation methods or techniques are the most ethical when translating personal narratives dealing with trauma and emotions, and provides good practice guidelines for different stakeholders (audiovisual translators, Language Service Providers, charities, survivors and filmmakers) to ensure that the voices of those who have suffered from trauma and Gender-Based Violence are ethically conveyed on-screen. It also shows how subtitlers cope with the translation of challenging sensitive material. The work described in this book is based on Prof Bosseaux’s Ethical Translation project and is underpinned by a practical component: a multilingual documentary featuring women who have gone through traumatic events and whose first language is not English. Above all, the research emphasises the importance of filming and translating ethically with a focus on making sure survivors and audiovisual translators’ voices are fully heard through respectful translation. This book showcases the theories and methods used and developed throughout the Ethical Translation project and the results of the research conducted, ultimately demonstrating the importance of carrying out practice-based research and encouraging collaboration between academics, practitioners and stakeholders to produce research that can be of use to, and be applied by, these groups.

Emotionally intelligent people are thought to be more skilled in recognizing, thinking about, using, and managing emotions. Enthusiasm for this construct has given rise to a mixed body of findings, and it is useful to begin charting new directions for the field. In support of these efforts, experts were asked to contribute to a Special Issue on ability-related approaches to emotional intelligence (EI). Special Issue papers speak to theory, mechanism, measurement, and training. In addition, papers seek to forge links with research traditions focused on interpersonal perception, emotional awareness, and emotion regulation. As the result of these efforts, new insights into EI—such as what it consists of and how it works—can be anticipated in upcoming years.

After decades of intensive research and over 10,000 publications, preterm birth remains a major global obstetric healthcare problem. Each year, early birth is responsible for the deaths of more than one million infants worldwide and is a major cause of life-long disability. Preterm birth places an enormous financial burden on our healthcare systems, resulting in long-term adverse health outcomes and lost productivity for many people. Preterm birth is a syndrome, associated with several different aetiologies; hence, potential treatment strategies need to be matched to pathophysiology in order to be effective. There is now unequivocal evidence that inflammation is causally involved in a majority of spontaneous preterm deliveries. However, the triggers of inflammation, and the strategies by which it can be safely and effectively prevented and treated, remain the subject of ongoing investigation and debate. While intraamniotic infection is an important cause of inflammation-associated preterm birth, particularly in very preterm deliveries, ‘sterile’ inflammation is actually a more common finding associated with preterm birth. It is likely that the nature, localisation, timing and extent of the inflammatory insult all determine the obstetric outcome and degree of risk to the fetus. These factors will also influence the success of approaches that might be employed to achieve better pregnancy outcomes. Despite our increased understanding of the causes and significance of intrauterine inflammation, we have yet to translate this knowledge into effective therapeutic strategies for preventing prematurity and mitigating its consequences for the neonate. In this Research Topic we review recent progress in treating and preventing inflammation-associated preterm birth, approaching the topic from both the causal and therapeutic perspectives. With global attention increasingly focused on the need to translate knowledge discovery into clinical translation, we hope this EBook will provide a stimulating and timely discussion that will focus research and lead to improved healthcare outcomes for women and children.

In people's minds, smells, flavors and affective phenomena are perceived as closely linked. But is it genuinely the case? The scientific study of this question is a rapidly expanding field, both in healthy and in clinical populations. Although still under-studied in comparison to other sensory modalities, chemical senses have proven to bring unique knowledge in the understanding of affective phenomena. In this context, this Research Topic is aimed to offer a snapshot of the present knowledge and questions raised in this field. Topics include, but are not limited to: affects elicited by odors and/or flavors in different individuals, contexts or cultures; emotional potency of odors in guiding human behavior and cognition (e.g. attention, memory formation, decisions and choices, withdrawal and approach behavior); affects communicated by body odors; affect regulation disorders and chemosensory perception. Studies on the biological underpinnings of these effects are also included.

The Affective Turn has lost its former innocence and euphoria. Affect Studies and its adjacent disciplines have now to prove that they can cope with the return of the affective real that technology, economy, and politics entail. Two seemingly contradictory developments serve as starting points for this volume. First, technological innovations such as affective computing, mood tracking, sentiment analysis, and social robotics all share a focus on the recognition and modulation of human affectivity. Affect gets measured, calculated, controlled. Secondly, recent developments in politics, social media usage, and right-wing journalism have contributed to a conspicuous rise of hate speech, cybermobbing, public shaming, “felt truths,” and resentful populisms. In a very specific way, politics as well as power have become affective. Affect gets mobilized, fomented, unleashed. When the ways we deal with our affectivity get unsettled in such a dramatic fashion, we have to rethink our ethical, aesthetical, political as well as legal regimes of affect organization.

Die Legitimität polizeilicher Gewalt ist dabei eng an eine affektive Neutralität der Handlung gebunden. Stephanie Schmidt setzt sich in ihrer Ethnografie mit diesen affektiven Komponenten der Gewaltarbeit auseinander. Sie analysiert performative Darstellungsweisen von Wut, die als Arbeitsgegenstand und -werkzeug Bedeutung im polizeilichen Alltag erhalten. Ausgehend vom Begriff der Ordnung ermöglicht ihr emotionstheoretisch geprägter Blick, Gewaltsamkeit als Körpertechnik und damit auch als Ausdrucksform polizeilicher Arbeit zu begreifen.

Kollektive Emotionen sind im Fußball allgegenwärtig - doch bisher wenig erforscht. Michael Wetzels nimmt sich dieses Themas an und analysiert die Zusammenhänge aus wissenssoziologischer Perspektive. Mit seinem Forschungskonzept kann er zeigen, dass kollektive Emotionen, wie wir sie bisher geglaubt haben zu kennen, nicht existieren. Vielmehr stellen sie Interpretationen dar, welche erst unter bestimmten Bedingungen sicht- und erklärbar werden. Diese Erkenntnisse tragen zu einer allgemeinen Grundlagenforschung zu Kollektivität und Emotionalität bei und bieten ebenso im Anwendungsbereich des Fußballs (z.B. in der Sozialen Arbeit) Ansatzpunkte in der praktischen Arbeit mit »kollektiven Emotionen«.

"AI and the Technological Singularity: A Fallacy or a Great Opportunity" is a collection of essays that addresses the question of whether the technological singularity—the notion that AI-based computers can program the next generation of AI-based computers until a singularity is achieved, where an AI-based computer can exceed human intelligence—is a fallacy or a great opportunity. The group of scholars that address this question have a variety of positions on the singularity, ranging from advocates to skeptics. No conclusion can be reached, as the development of artificial intelligence is still in its infancy, and there is much wishful thinking and imagination in this issue rather than trustworthy data. The reader will find a cogent summary of the issues faced by researchers who are working to develop the field of artificial intelligence and, in particular, artificial general intelligence. The only conclusion that can be reached is that there exists a variety of well-argued positions as to where AI research is headed.

This open access book examines an interdependent approach to happiness and well-being, one that contrasts starkly with dominant approaches that have originated from Western culture(s). It highlights the diversity of potential pathways towards happiness and well-being globally, and answers calls - voiced in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals - for more socially and environmentally sustainable models. Leading global organizations including the OECD, UNICEF, and UNESCO are now proposing human happiness and well-being as a more sustainable alternative to a myopic focus on GDP growth. Yet, the definition of well-being offered by these organizations derives largely from the philosophies, social sciences, and institutional patterns of Europe and the United States. Across seven chapters this book carefully probes the inadequacy of these approaches to well-being globally and reveals the distorting effect this has on how we imagine our world, organize institutions, and plan our collective future(s). It shares a wealth of evidence and examples from across East Asia - a region where interdependence remains foregrounded - and concludes by provocatively arguing that interdependence may provide a more sustainable approach to happiness and well-being in the 21st century. Animal Emotions: How They Drive Human Behavior gives a concise overview of ancient mammalian emotions deeply rooted in the human brain. The current Special Issue is a synthetic overview of 21 published articles. The book Becoming Human: Li Zehou’s Ethics offers a critical introduction and in-depth analysis of Li Zehou’s moral philosophy and ethics. Li Zehou, who is one of the most influential contemporary Chinese philosophers, believes that ethics is the most important philosophical discipline. He aims to revive, modernize, develop, and complement Chinese traditional ethics through what he calls “transformative creation” (轉化性的創造). He takes Chinese ethics, which represents the main pillar of Chinese philosophy, as a vital basis for his elaborations on certain aspects of Kant’s, Marx’s and other Western theoreticians’ thoughts on ethics, and hopes to contribute in this way to the development of a new global ethics for all of humankind.

Could we understand, in biological terms, the unique and fantastic capabilities of the human brain to both create and enjoy art? In the past decade neuroscience has made a huge leap in developing experimental techniques as well as theoretical frameworks for studying emergent properties following the activity of large neuronal networks. These methods, including MEG, fMRI, sophisticated data analysis approaches and behavioral methods, are increasingly being used in many labs worldwide, with the goal to explore brain mechanisms corresponding to the artistic experience. The 37 articles composing this unique Frontiers Research Topic bring together experimental and theoretical research, linking state-of-the-art knowledge about the brain with the phenomena of Art. This reprint is dedicated to the study of brain activity related to emotional and attentional involvement as measured by Brain–computer interface (BCI) systems designed for different purposes. A BCI system can translate brain signals (e.g., electric or hemodynamic brain activity indicators) into a command to execute an action in the BCI application (e.g., a wheelchair, the cursor on the screen, a spelling device or a game). These tools have the advantage of having real-time access to the ongoing brain activity of the individual, which can provide insight into the user’s emotional and attentional states by training a classification algorithm to recognize mental states. The success of BCI systems in contemporary neuroscientific research relies on the fact that they allow one to “think outside the lab”. The integration of technological solutions, artificial intelligence and cognitive science allowed and will allow researchers to envision more and more applications for the future. We interact with our environment through perception and action. Perception is based on sensory components while actions are based on motor components. It is commonly accepted that these sensorimotor components constitute the foundation of knowledge (i.e., percepts and concepts), action and emotion. However, whether or not these components remain part of knowledge, action and emotion is still being debated (see Glenberg, Witt, & Metcalfe, 2013). According to the classical symbolic/abstracted approach of cognition, cognitive processes operate on symbols that are abstracted from these components. Reversely, embodied cognition theory states that knowledge, action and emotion remain grounded in these sensorimotor components (see Wilson, 2002). This embodiment revolution assumes that the interactions between present and absent —but simulated in memory— sensory-motor components determine the emergence of knowledge, action and emotion (Barsalou, 2008). It also implies that perception, memory (in particular conceptual knowledge), action and emotion interact together in a closer way that previously thought (e.g. Riou, Lesourd, Brunel & Versace, 2011; Corveleyn, Lopez-Moliner & Coello, 2012; Vermeulen et al., 2013). Despite the accumulation of empirical evidence showing that perception, memory, action and emotion interact together, less is known about the dynamics of these interactions. It remains to precise the temporal dynamic (when these interactions occur), the neural underlying networks, and the factors that modulate these interactions. In this Research Topic, several groups of researchers from both social and biological psychology summarize their findings addressing the relation between emotion and behavior. The Reflective-Impulsive Model (RIM) (Strack & Deutsch, 2004; 2014 in press) serves as a general orientation and provides a link to integrate the results from seemingly divergent perspectives. The contributions focuses on different types of emotional behaviors, like facial expressions and impulsive reactions. They address the central issue of approach vs. avoidance and include clinical topics like addiction and fear. Methodologically, the contributions are predominantly experimental and are partly based on manipulations in the context of virtual reality.

Food is a source of nutrients but it also provides basic pleasure and aesthetic experiences. Acceptance, food choice, and consumption are affected by many factors, including both intrinsic and extrinsic factors and cues, as well as consumer characteristics. Food-elicited emotions are becoming a critical component in designing products that meet consumers’ needs and expectations. Several studies have reported on the presence of emotional responses to food and the relationships of these to product acceptability, preference, and choice. This Special Issue brings together a small range of studies with a diversity of approaches that provide good examples of the complex and multidisciplinary nature of this subject matter.

Uniting literary analysis, theories of emotion from the sciences and humanities, and a deeply archival account of Tudor history, Irish freshly examines how literature reflects and constructs the dynamics of emotional life in the Renaissance courtly sphere. Spanning the 16th century, this study argues that the dynamics of disgust, envy, rejection, and dread, as they are currently theorized in the modern affective sciences, can be seen to guide textual production in the early modern court. With a multidisciplinary approach, the book develops and advances current scholarly treatments of early modern emotionality—which, in their largely historicist orientation, have tended to consider only how emotions were understood by Renaissance subjects. Because emotions are both socially contingent and biologically grounded, the author demonstrates the value of placing the transhistorical insights of the modern affective sciences alongside the still crucial findings of the historicist mode.

Franziska Sörgel argues that emotions influence innovations as they are inherent in initial ideas, expectations and habitual evaluation criteria that impact the development process. Instead of assuming that the innovation process is subject to rational and linear creativity, the study adopts the notion of ›moral economies‹ by Lorraine Daston as a space for negotiation. Such an approach enables decision-makers to question the evaluation criteria and patterns for technological developments before implementing them in society.

Nowadays, not only psychologists are interested in the study of Emotional Intelligence (EI). Teachers, educator, managers, employers, and people, in general, pay attention to EI. For example, teachers would like to know how EI could affect student’s academic results, and managers are concerned about how EI influences their employees’ performance. The concept of EI has been widely used in recent years to the extent that people start to applying it in daily life. EI is broadly defined as the capacity to process and use emotional information. More specifically, according to Mayer and Salovey, EI is the ability to: “1) accurate perception, appraise, and expression of emotion; 2) access and/or generation of feelings when they facilitate thought; 3) understand emotions and emotional knowledge; and 4) regulate emotions to promote emotional and intellectual growth” (Mayer and Salovey 1997, p. 10). When new information arises into one specific area of knowledge, the work of the scientists is to investigate the relation between this new information and other established concepts. In this sense, EI could be considered as a new framework to explain human behaviour. As a young concept in Psychology, EI could be used to elucidate the performance in the activities of everyday life. Over the past two decades, studies of EI have tried to delimitate how EI is linked to other competences. A vast number of studies have reported a relation between EI and a large list of competences such as academic and work success, life satisfaction, attendee to emotions, assertiveness, emotional expression, emotional-based decision making, impulsive control, stress management, among others. Moreover, recent researches have shown that EI plays an important role in the prediction of behaviour besides personality and cognitive factors.However, it is not until quite recently, that studies on EI have considered the importance of individual differences in EI and their interaction with cognitive abilities.The general issue of this Research Topic was to expose the role of individual differences on EI in the development of a large number of competencies that support a more efficient performance in people’s everyday life. The present Research Topic provide an extensive review that may give light to the better understanding of how individual differences in EI affect human behaviour. We have considered studies that analyse: 1) how EI contributes to emotional, cognitive and social process beyond the well-known contribution of IQ and personality traits, as well as the brain system that supports the EI; 2) how EI contributes to relationships among emotions and health and well-being, 3) the roles of EI during early development and the evaluation in different populations, 4) how implicit beliefs about emotions and EI influence emotional abilities.

Wovon also handelt die Wissenschaft, wenn sie sich mit Gefühlen beschäftigt? Um diese Frage zu beantworten, entwickelt Alexander Kochinka systematisch Kriterien, mit denen nicht nur der komplexe Forschungsgegenstand »Gefühl« selbst entfaltet, sondern auch der jeweilige theoretische Zugriff auf dieses Phänomen eingeordnet werden kann. Anschließend werden die Leser, auf diese Weise begrifflich und theoretisch sensibilisiert, mit den Emotionstheorien von Charles Darwin, Wilhelm Wundt und William James bekannt gemacht. Der genaue Blick auch in die Details enthüllt dabei, daß diese »Patriarchen der Psychologiegeschichte« eine ganze Menge mehr zu den Gefühlen zu sagen haben, als ihnen in der gegenwärtigen Debatte zugestanden wird.

Schmerz ist kulturell überformt. Durch das kulturelle Phänomen der Verfeinerung des Spürens werden unsere Körper immer empfindlicher. Am Beispiel von Kopfschmerzen kann Stefan Dreßke zeigen, dass die physische Empfindlichkeit den Normen und Praktiken sozialer Milieus, des Geschlechts und des Alters folgt. Die soziologische Studie mit Berichten von 136 Frauen und Männern untersucht die sich zunehmend differenzierenden Deutungen des Körperausdrucks und den Wandel der Krankheitsvorstellungen. Dabei wird deutlich, dass Krankheiten der Empfindlichkeit Narrative sind, die der Verständigung in Sprach- und Praxiscodes dienen und die institutionellen Regimes folgen.

Feeling Blue is the first book-length history of colour in modern hospitals. It examines colour in relation to six key themes – hygiene, emotion, humanisation, homeliness, play, and consumerism – which are tied together by the idea of the ‘modern’ hospital. The book does not simply describe changes to the appearance of hospitals over time, but instead thinks expansively about the role of colour in shaping how hospitals felt. It uses colour to understand the layered meanings of modernity in twentieth-century Britain, and its relationship to the ‘mundane’ or everyday life of hospitals.

The author explores the ways in which generational experiences are connected, what is continued, what triggers gradual or abrupt changes between generations - and between women and men within these generations. The book explores how new feelings of gender gradually change gender norms from within, and how they contribute to the incremental creation of new social practices.​​​

Nielsen suggests a new way of conducting psychosocial research that focuses on generational psychological patterns of gender identities and gendered subjectivities in times of change from a psychoanalytic perspective. Combining generational and longitudinal research, the book works with temporality as a theoretical as well as a methodological dimension. Theoretically it combines Raymond Williams' idea of "a structure of feeling" with the work of Eric Fromm, Hans Loewald, Nancy Chodorow and Jessica Benjamin.

On literary representations of an emotion whose central significance for the history of tragedy and the tragic play has scarcely been explored: hatred. Hatred does not belong to the realm of fluid, dialogical speech, but aims at silencing, denigrating and destroying its object. Despite, or perhaps precisely because of, this borderline situation with the realm of physical violence, hate-filled speech acquires a particular dynamism and intensity, especially in drama. From a comparative perspective, the contributions in this volume examine the significance of hatred, enmity and contempt for the history of tragedy and the tragic play. They raise questions of media history regarding the staging of emotions, as well as connections to historical experiences of violence and war, and reveal the poetological, rhetorical, aesthetic and political significance of an emotion that is still neglected by research. Focusing on the 17th and 18th centuries, the volume examines a constellation in which the emotion of hatred—long-lasting in nature and aimed at the annihilation of its object—proves particularly productive.

Doch wie kann man kritisch mit solchen politischen Gefühlen umgehen? Auf Grundlage einer transdisziplinären Lektüre der Debatten zu »Gefühl« und »Kritik« analysiert Frederik Metje Ansätze, die beide Begriffe miteinander in Beziehung setzen. Diese Kritiken politischer Gefühle führen zu einem Ansatz der Selbst-Bildung, durch die es gelingt, sich am eigenen Schopf aus dem Sumpf der politischen Gefühle zu ziehen.

Die Sozialisation von Emotionen ist bislang vor allem in euroamerikanischen Mittelschichten untersucht worden. Leberecht Funk analysiert in seiner sozial- und kulturanthropologischen Studie emotionale Sozialisationspraktiken bei den Tao, die auf Lanyu, einer zu Taiwan gehörenden Insel, leben. Lokalen Vorstellungen zufolge bedrohen Geister die Seelen von Kindern. Als Teil ihrer Erziehung und zu ihrem Schutz werden die Kinder einer ambivalent erscheinenden Form der Abhärtung unterzogen, die eine spezifische moralische Angst- und Scham-Disposition in ihnen hervorruft, die sie im späteren Entwicklungsverlauf überwinden müssen. Die Studie zeigt, dass die ontogenetische Entwicklung von Emotionen eine größere Plastizität aufweist als bislang in der Entwicklungspsychologie angenommen.
