Jocelyn is a high school student who begins to have visions when she's near the new boy who moved in across the street. She's also a young lady in the late nineteenth century who begins to have visions when her fiance gives her a pocket watch. The action unfolds in alternating chapters between 2009 Jocelyn and 1878 Jocelyn. The action in 1878 is more entertaining, with a pregnancy scandal to liven up the action, but in 2009, it's just a bunch of going to various school activities and fainting a lot. The eventual reveal is in the last two chapters and not very well explained, although that's probably being saved for later books in this series. Also, and this is my biggest complaint, THIS BOOK NEEDS AN EDITOR!!! There were multiple word usage errors: play for placed, shuttered instead of shuddered, baby breathe not baby's breath; it went on and on and really jolted me out of the story every time. Also present were a lot of misplaced commas and declarative sentences ending with question marks. Waddington tries to write with more proper grammar and diction when relating events from the past, but unfortunately is not terribly well informed about said grammar and diction. It mostly came off as though she just spelled out all the contractions and had her characters refer to one another as "Miss Elizabeth" and "Mr. Dimitri" etc. A good editor would correct these issues, as well as cut numerous superfluous scenes from the text which do not serve to advance the plot. Our minds often wander, but can our souls? In 2009, Jocelyn Timmons enjoys the daily routine of high school, volleyball practice, and hanging out with friends. When neighbors move in across the street and she is introduced to Jackson, it's hard not to be attracted to his brilliant green eyes; but as soon as Jocelyn gets near him, something strange happens, and she instantly experiences bouts of nausea and dizziness. Then the visions start. Visions of another life, another world, where she feels trapped by the restrictions of her old-fashioned society and dreams of the freedom to choose her own path. They're short and blurry at first, but soon they evolve, and Jocelyn finds herself questioning what is real. Essence is the first novel in a unique series by A.L. Waddington that chronicles the life of Jocelyn Timmons as she slowly begins to understand the implications of her visions. Is it really possible that she could be living on two planes of existence, falling asleep in one and waking in another? And what is the meaning of Jackson's sudden presence in her life? Jocelyn struggles with the bizarre images she witnesses and the emotions aroused by the individuals she encounters; and as the barrier in her mind begins to disintegrate, she learns she must choose between love, family, and her own happiness. Essence takes a fresh look at the idea of time travel and the power of the mind in a complex story that will cause you to question your own perception of reality. No library descriptions found. |

This is definitely an original take on the supernatural teen romance trend. I honestly didn't know what was going on, in a good way. It doesn't totally make sense, but I prefer that to being overly predictable. ( )
