Through the concept of transdifference, conventional differentiations in terms of gender, ethnicity, class, generation or nation can be critically analyzed.The contributors of the volume show that moments of transdifference point to the possibilities of the modern individual to take part in shaping social structures in the late Habsburg monarchy during its social transformation. Discussing questions of canonization, multilingualism and transculturality, the essays explore forgotten works and reflect upon modern ways of living as well as the transgression of gender-specific and ethnic boundaries both in elite and mass culture.
