The portrait collection of Emperor Francis I of Austria (1768-1835) is one of the rare examples of an aristocratic portrait collection that has been preserved. The aim of the study is to shed light on the history of this example of the Habsburgian culture of collecting and to reconstruct the development of the collection. The specific characteristic of the classification system is compared to other reconstructable collections of the 18th century like those of Prince Eugene of Savoy and of Louis Philippe I, King of the French.
