Algorithms are not to be regarded as a technical structure but as a social phenomenon - they embed themselves, currently still very subtle, into our political and social system. Algorithms shape human behavior on various levels: they influence not only the aesthetic reception of the world but also the well-being and social interaction of their users. They act and intervene in a political and social context. As algorithms influence individual behavior in these social and political situations, their power should be the subject of critical discourse - or even lead to active disobedience and to the need for appropriate tools and methods which can be used to break the algorithmic power.

Which everyday practices allowed women to sustain and fulfill individuality and agency under dictatorial rule? This book adds to a rich scholarship on the history of late Francoism and the transition to democracy in Modern Spain through the lens of oral history and life writing. Aurora Morcillo tells the stories of anonymous individuals from both student and working class backgrounds - crucial sites of active resistance against the dictatorship at the time - and provides an interdisciplinary feminist analysis of the inevitable modernization of Spain in the 1960s and 1970s. This study uncovers a Deleuzian rendition of historical unfolding/becoming rather than simply being a collection of oral histories: a historical narration which proposes to be a creative historical ontology.

"1918" signifies more than the end of the First World War. The reference to the year often also justifies narratives in the history of education. On the other hand, this volume explores the simultaneities of caesurae and traditions, ruptures and continuities in regional, national, European and global perspectives. It examines diverse paradoxes of supposedly old and new pedagogical cultures and practices as well as ambivalences of youth between rebellion and attachment to educational ideals. It also focuses on the questioning of schools and pedagogy, their relegitimisation and the intertwining of social democracy and socialism with educational reforms and traditions. In this way, the volume aims at the often described "clash of ideologies" in the interwar period and at the circulation of competing knowledge, so that it discusses the complex openness of 1918 in terms of educational history.

Denn vieles von dem, was sich mit der Chiffre "68" verbindet, begann schon vorher. 1964 verdichteten sich zahlreiche Ereignisse zu einer Zäsur, die den gesellschaftlichen Umbruch schon vor 1968 einläutete. Mit dem Blick auf unterschiedliche Episoden aus Gesellschaft und Politik hinterfragt dieser Band den bisherigen Stellenwert von "68" und weist nach, dass ein erheblicher Teil der mentalen Modernisierung schon viel früher stattfand.

This edited collection proposes a common good approach to development theory and practice. Rather than focusing on the outcomes or conditions of development, the contributors concentrate on the quality of development processes, suggesting that a common good dynamic is key in order to trigger development. Resulting from more than three years of research by an international group of over fifty scholars, the volume advocates for a modern understanding of the common good—rather than a theological or metaphysical good—in societies by emphasising the social practice of ‘commoning’ at its core. It suggests that the dynamic equilibrium of common goods in a society should be at the centre of development efforts. For this purpose, it develops a matrix of common good dynamics, accounting for how institutions, social norms and common practices interconnect by identifying five key drivers not only of development, but human development (agency, governance, justice, stability, humanity). Based on this matrix, the contributors suggest a possible metric for measuring the quality of these dynamics. The last section of the book highlights the possibilities enabled by this approach through a series of case studies. The concept of the common good has recently enjoyed a revival and inspired practitioners keen to look beyond the shortcomings of political and economic liberalism. This book builds on those efforts to think beyond the agenda of twentieth-century development policies, and will be of interest to those working in the fields of development, economics, sociology, philosophy and political science.

Local peoples rapidly adopted this trend, which was disseminated through its social elites. As a form of communication, epigraphs were mainly used for both individual and communal celebrations and self-representations. The material that is evidence of this practice, the engraved surfaces with writings on a variety of topics, are today privileged sources that enable us to address the challenges posed by the study of the societies of classical antiquity, despite the fact that they can provide only a fragmentary picture of the world from which they arise. These are the main concerns of this research, which focuses on southern Callaecia. From a starting point of the review of the epigraphic data originating from western Bracarensis, an attempt has been made to clarify its nature, chronology and representativeness, investigating some of the markers of the society that gave life to the territory, settlements and roads they were connected by during Roman rule.

To show how these processes work, Maria M. Sojka examines three ideals about how science should operate. These ideals concern the understanding of uncertainties, the relationship between models and data, and the role of values in science. Focusing especially on the period between the Protestant Reformation and 1700, Goodey challenges the accepted wisdom that would have us believe that 'intelligence' and 'disability' describe natural, trans-historical realities. Al mismo tiempo en distintos territorios de la región se están desarrollando alternativas agroecológicas, cooperativas, redes de economía solidaria, eco-tecnologías apropiadas y nuevas construcciones societales basadas en paradigmas como el buen vivir, que van sembrando esperanzas de evitar el colapso, bajo el desarrollo de sociedades en movimiento que reflexionan y actúan en defensa de la madre tierra.

Die Antwort darauf liegt jedoch nicht in einer präziseren sonderpädagogischen Diagnostik, Förderung und Intervention, sondern im Umbau von Schule, Universität und Gesellschaft. Joachim Bröcher plädiert für eine selbstgestaltete Bildungspflicht, ein bedingungsloses Grundeinkommen, die Gründung von selbstbestimmten Community-Projekten (in denen gearbeitet, gelernt und gelebt wird) sowie eine handlungsorientierte, philosophische Pädagogik. Der soziale, kulturelle und politische Prozess der Digitalisierung hat neue Gemeinschafts- und Bildungsformen denkbar werden lassen, die u.a. durch drei Szenen entscheidend geprägt wurden: die kybernetisch-künstlerischen Hintergründe der PC-Kultur als Basis des Silicon Valley, die Popularisierung des Internets in den 1990er Jahren und aktuelle Entwicklungen, die unter dem Begriff des digitalen Nomadentums gefasst werden. Martin Donner und Heidrun Allert fragen vor dem Hintergrund der damit verbundenen Verschiebungen der Gemeinschaftsverständnisse nach praxistauglichen Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten der digitalen Gesellschaft.

Terroranschläge und Kriege, Tsunami, Erdbeben, Vulkanausbrüche, Klimawandel, Ölpest, Finanzkrise - Berichte über "Katastrophen" sind längst medialer Alltag. Offen bleibt jedoch die Frage, welche Intentionen und Konsequenzen die zunehmende Verwendung des Katastrophenbegriffs durch Politik und Wirtschaft mit sich bringt. Die Beiträge des Bandes fragen daher: Dient der Begriff tatsächlich nur der Beschreibung - oder soll auch eine Atmosphäre des Ausnahmezustands geschaffen werden, die eine Anwendung von sonst nicht konsensfähigen Verfahren ermöglicht? Wohin führt es, wenn die Einordnung von Ereignissen in umfassende soziale Prozesse umgangen wird, wenn ihre Wahrnehmung als Konsequenz eingegangener Risiken ausbleibt?

In welcher Welt wollen wir leben? Miteinander im Gegeneinander, Nebeneinander oder doch in einem Füreinander? Ausgehend von dieser Frage wendet sich Paul*A Helfritzsch dem bestehenden Alltag zu, mit der Absicht, diesen zu verändern. Veränderung wird dabei nicht nur als leeres Prinzip verstanden, sondern als Vorbereitung. Worauf? Auf die Veränderung. So entsteht ein Plädoyer für eine Demokratie ohne Führer*innen, ein Miteinander ohne Mord, ein Plädoyer für Grazie und wehrhafte, nicht ausgehöhlte Menschenwürde. Darin sollen Ideen aus der Nacht in den Tag treten, die gemeinsam einen neuen Alltag, eine Normalität der Pluralität formen können. Gerahmt wird dies durch performative Versuche, der Pluralität durch ihre Wiederholung ein mögliches Gesicht zu geben.

Im Jahr 2005 startete der Berliner Senat ein spannendes Experiment: Wie können sich die öffentlichen Verwaltungen und Landesbetriebe öffnen und mehr Migrant*innen als Beschäftigte gewinnen? Der Senat wollte Verantwortung in eigener Sache übernehmen, da er bis dahin selbst nur wenig Personal aus Einwanderer-Communities beschäftigte. Die zentralen Fragen waren: Was sollte und konnte man an den Einstellungsverfahren und in der Ausbildung ändern? Und wie kann man als Arbeitgeber für Migrant*innen attraktiv werden? Andreas Germershausen und Wilfried Kruse zeichnen mehr als ein Jahrzehnt Berliner Teilhabepolitik nach und zeigen auf, was interkulturelle Öffnung und Diversity-Orientierung in der Berufsausbildung konkret bedeuten.

How can we counter the rise in authoritarian attitudes and the loss of trust within European societies? Experts and writers provide survey-based answers. The global financial crisis, Covid, Russia’s aggression in Ukraine: against the backdrop of major crises, European societies are seeking security, and many find this security in a longing for strong leadership, without elections or parliaments, as seen in Italy and France. Growing dissatisfaction with the functioning of democracy is the key finding of a study commissioned by Oliver Rathkolb for the Institute of Cultural and Contemporary History at the University of Vienna: in 2022, people in eight European countries were surveyed about their views on history and democratic attitudes, and their responses were compared with a survey from 2019, prior to the Covid pandemic. Based on the results of this comparison and an analysis of the causes, recognised scholars develop models and strategies in this book to raise democratic awareness, seeking to counteract a trend towards an authoritarian era – an era that sociologist Ralf Dahrendorf had already foreseen in the 1990s as a consequence of the social crises brought about by neoliberal turbo-globalisation. These academic findings are complemented by literary reflections on the themes of democracy and authoritarianism by European writers. The book is published in full in English.

Öffentlich kaum wahrgenommen schreitet die Veralltäglichung des Militärischen und des Krieges voran. Der Begriff "Banal Militarism" lenkt die Aufmerksamkeit auf unspektakuläre Prozesse, die von den AutorInnen des Bandes anhand historischer wie aktueller Beispiele der Repräsentation, der Inszenierung und Aneignung des Militärischen in Literatur, Theater, Kino, (Computer-)Spiel, Mode sowie in der Presse und im Alltagsleben analysiert werden. Solche Phänomene in ihrer Wirkungsmächtigkeit auf politische Kultur zu thematisieren, theoretisch zu reflektieren und als bedeutsames Forschungsfeld zu konturieren, ist das zentrale Anliegen des Bandes.

Accessible environments enable people with impairments to participate in social life. But what exactly does accessibility mean? What makes a condition in the environment a barrier? What aspects determine whether environments are conducive or obstructive to social participation? How can these aspects be measured, assessed and classified? What does this mean for the planning and assessment of designed environments? The contributions to the book deal with these questions from different disciplinary perspectives. They show the multi-layeredness and complexity of the topic of accessibility. The book is intended to give substance to the discussion on barriers and accessibility - a field that is still little researched - and to inspire interdisciplinary dialogue and reflection on practice.

Wie sieht der Verkehr von heute und die Mobilität von morgen aus? Elektroautos sind auf dem Vormarsch und werden für viele Verkehrsprobleme als zentrale Lösung angepriesen. Allerdings greift dieser Wechsel der Antriebstechnologie zu kurz, denn er bringt neue soziale und ökologische Probleme für die Rohstoffpolitik und die globale Wertschöpfungskette mit sich. Aber auch Mobilitätskonzepte wie Carsharing, Ridepooling oder autonomes Fahren werfen viele Fragen auf und sind verknüpft mit gesellschaftlichen Konflikten. Die aus verschiedenen Disziplinen kommenden Autor*innen beschäftigen sich mit diesen hochaktuellen Entwicklungen und liefern Orientierung in der Auseinandersetzung mit der Transformation und Zukunft der (Auto-)Mobilität.
