This last book in the trilogy clarifies the timeframe used in this trilogy and expands upon it. As I liked the second book more than the first, I liked the third book more than the second. The arcs of many beloved characters tug at the heartstrings in this one, and leave the reader with a sense of the complexities of Gemmell’s plot. Most importantly, Shannow is an unforgettable character. ( )

Typical of Gemmell's fantasy worlds, although this particular one resembles L'Amour's Wild West on steroids. Brings in SF elements of multiple parallel worlds, time travel, world-jumping along with the magic and savage hordes. The protagonist, Jon Shannow, has tried to renounce violence, but events force his hand and he returns to his persona of the Agent of Justice -- vigilante violence in pursuit of order -- that characterizes cultures without a reliable legal system. The philosophical base for his worldview is presented in ersatz Biblical passages (along with some bastardized real ones), all bearing the refrain that it is wrong to sacrifice the good and innocent to the depredations of the evil, rather than eliminating those who do evil. He allows for some ambiguous cases, but most of the bad guys are indisputably earning their fate. ( )

The last in the 'Jerusalem Man' Trilogy, and arguably the weakest of the 3, but still a brilliant read.

Gemmell seems to pour out his love of alternative dimensions and time travel all into this final novel. The previous books were heavily influenced by this love but nowhere near the extent of Bloodstone. Shannow is a changed man, renouncing all violence and taking up the role of a preacher, but when his village is attacked can he continue to hold his peace or will he come out with guns blazing?

Shannow doesn't feature as prominently as in the previous books but you can still feel his power running through every subplot. I would advise that the previous 2 books are read in order as many back references are made and knowing the history will help you grasp the new storylines.

I have become a big fan of Gemmell while reading the Shannow novels, but wish some of the parallel dimensions was toned down for this final installment. Easily recommendable and a good read. ( )
