In de Decamerone gaat het om zeven vrouwen en drie mannen die in 1348 vanwege de pest vanuit Florence naar een landgoed zijn gevlucht. Ze leven tien dagen in quarantaine, die ze doorbrengen met eten, dansen en verhalen vertellen. Deze raamvertelling stelt Boccaccio in staat honderd zeer verschillende novellen samen te voegen. Het zijn fabels, parabels, anekdoten en wonderlijke levensgeschiedenissen. Ze zijn bekend door mondelinge overlevering van het volk en het hof en uit andere manuscripten. De traditionele verhalen werden in het Toscaans opnieuw verteld.
