There are today demands from various stakeholders that higher education should approach practice. All kinds of practical elements are introduced, such as internships, various practical exercises, lecturers from practice and company visits. At the same time, there is a demand that the education should be academic, so that students are trained to be independent, critically examining citizens. This collection, which primarily focuses on disciplinary education, emphasizes the often delicate balance between these two demands. The different demands are demonstrated and discussed. The book contains suggestions for how practice-based elements can be included in both campus-based education and online education. Among the specific suggestions for possible methods to accomplish a balance between demands for practice-orientation and academic-orientation that are addressed are critical thinking and reflection as tools for academizing the practical elements. The book also contains other suggestions for how balance can be achieved, which are related to the degree of realism of the practical elements; the timing between practice and theory; and the relevance of the curriculum literature in relation to the practice. The book also discusses the need to have flow in order to be able to balance practical elements and academic values in a successful way.
