From a vocational education perspective, Bildung im Zeitalter der großen Industrie represents a milestone in the historiography of the dual system in Germany. Although Blankertz sheds light on various problem areas, he places them under one guiding problem: the absence and return of pedagogy to vocational training. Within this span, Blankertz reconstructs the economic and political development in Germany in the 19th century, which led to an educational policy and ideological situation that was ultimately no longer questioned by pedagogy and from whose reality it started when it felt responsible for vocational training again. A foreword by Günter Kutscha and an afterword by the editor Christoph Porcher frame this new edition and comment on the work from today's perspective.
