This interdisciplinary publication brings together researchers, practitioners, and media professionals—many of whom are either natives of or closely connected to the Styrian Salzkammergut. Representing various disciplines from the University of Graz and the University College of Teacher Education Styria, the contributors explore the historical, cultural, and socio-economic ties between Graz and this geographically secluded Alpine region. From the salt trade and artistic exchanges to regional traditions and contemporary developments, the volume sheds light on both historic and recent dynamics. The contributions span geography, art history, literature, music, digital economy, sociology, flora, folk costume, and the evolving concept of summer retreats. With years of preparatory fieldwork, this volume also commemorates the 25th anniversary of the long-term project Art History Styria, supported by the Province of Styria, and aligns with the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024. A recurring question—voiced most pointedly by contributor Tarek Leitner—asks whether outsiders may write about a region so deeply rooted in identity and tradition. The response: only those who have truly listened to the land earn the right to write about it
