From the production and generation of knowledge to the publication of scientific work, various powerful selection mechanisms are at work. Even the phrasing of an idea is subject to certain value attributions and functional logics of publishing, and the review of submitted manuscripts is no longer (only) about the assessment of the results and findings presented, but also – even in the case of double-blind review – about the assessment/evaluation of the academics themselves. The counting and visualisation of publications and citations along hierarchised publication formats and specific publication media are the most visible markers here. The authors deal with the practices of academic publishing in the context of adult education studies.
