The UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003) has become a significant factor in shaping global cultural policy in the twenty-first century. It emphasises the role of communities, the intergenerational transmission of traditional phenomena and cultural diversity. Intangible cultural heritage encompasses the practices, descriptions, expressions, knowledge and skills that people identify as part of their own cultural heritage. This collection includes articles that analyse processes related to the safeguarding and production of intangible cultural heritage in Finland and other countries. These processes are multifaceted and can involve contradictions. For instance, the adoption of the international convention can simultaneously empower local actors and perpetuate nationalist discourses and practices. Intangible cultural heritage practices are strongly rooted in the past but tightly focused on the present and future. The book presents examples of intangible heritage phenomena and policies aimed at building a sustainable future. Its chapters cover topics such as Kaustinen fiddle playing, the sauna culture, professional and amateur archaeological communities, culturally sustainable education and relationship with nature.
