This book aims to rewrite Chinese history with new perspectives and rediscover a millennia-old civilization. As Christopher Hill observed, “Each generation must rewrite history”, and as Benedetto Croce noted, “All history is contemporary history.” While history does not change, our understanding and writing of it do, as times, materials, and methods evolve. Some long-held historical judgments have been treated as standard without sufficient evidence. Part I of this volume, “Chinese History under a New Historical Perspective,” questions inherited historiographical assumptions, using fresh angles, diverse sources, and modern research to reinterpret the past and present a fuller social portrait. Arguing that China is part of the world and cannot be studied in isolation, Part II, “Chinese History in a Global Perspective,” places China within global history—examining relations, interactions, and influences between China, its neighbors, the West, and the world—inviting readers to journey widely through the expanse of Chinese history.
