What did giving birth during the pandemic mean? How did COVID-19 affect the process of bringing a new being into the world? What can we learn from scientific studies on the subject? These are some of the questions that guide the development of this book, which aims to give value to the experiences of pregnant individuals, mothers, fathers, and health professionals regarding maternal and child care during the global health emergency caused by SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19. The text emphasizes the emotions and social support networks, including those mediated by Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), the risks of developing COVID-19 during pregnancy, the immunological importance of breastfeeding, and the bio-psycho-social care measures that include a more humane approach, better environmental conditions in hospital settings, the development of telemedicine, and the importance of controlled immunization processes. Likewise, this book contributes to the debate on obstetric violence, new forms of fatherhood, and alternative ways of being a family or relatives. Overall, this work, from an interdisciplinary perspective and grounded in the experiences of the individuals involved in the process of bringing a new being into society, compiles a set of recommendations that, if taken into account, can help achieve the much-needed humanized health system.
