The Cistercian Caesarius of Heisterbach (ca. 1180-1240) is one of the most renowned authors of the Middle Ages. His 'Eight Books of Miracles' (Libri VIII miraculorum) are a collection of instructional, edifying and deterrent narratives, encompassing tales of saints and demons, of humans and animals, of minor miracles and major misfortunes. Through his narratives, Caesarius transports his audience on a journey from the Rhineland to the Baltic and to Jerusalem, offering a multifaceted depiction of the political, social and religious developments in the 13th century. The new edition of the 'Eight Books of Miracles' comprises an annotated version of the Latin text, a new German translation, and an analysis of the work and its manuscript tradition. Der Zisterziensermönch Caesarius von Heisterbach (ca. 1180–1240) gehört zu den bekanntesten Autoren des Mittelalters. Seine „Acht Wunderbücher“ (Libri VIII miraculorum) sind eine Sammlung von Material zur Belehrung, Erbauung und Abschreckung: Erzählungen über Heilige und Dämonen, über Menschen und Tiere, über kleine Wunder und große Unglücke. In seinen Geschichten nimmt Caesarius das Publikum mit auf eine Reise, die vom Rheinland bis ins Baltikum und nach Jerusalem führt. So entsteht ein facettenreiches Panorama der politischen, sozialen und religiösen Entwicklungen im 13. Jahrhundert. Die Neu-Edition der „Acht Wunderbücher“ bietet eine kommentierte Fassung des lateinischen Textes, erstmals eine deutsche Übersetzung sowie eine Auswertung des Werkes und seiner handschriftlichen Überlieferung.
