This book examines how Norwegian education policy may create crises rather than solve them. Schools are overloaded with tasks that cannot be resolved politically. The school is expected to provide students with shared frames of reference, promote sustainability and democracy, and contribute to social levelling, inclusion, and successful integration. It is supposed to counteract historical decline and help us realise utopian visions of the future. When such extensive and numerous goals are set for the school, it becomes difficult for teachers, students, and principals to succeed. This often leads the school into a continuous state of crisis. It becomes the cause of both minor and major societal crises at the same time as it is expected to function as a panacea. In this book, we explore the function, ontology, and epistemology of crisis within educational policy rhetoric, and we analyse how education policy constructs crises or attempts to manage them in different historical phases. The topics discussed are highly relevant to today’s school debates. The book is intended for teachers, teacher educators, school leaders, education policymakers, education researchers, journalists, labour unions, and others with an interest in education. The book is initiated by the research group Compete at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences and edited by Tom Are Trippestad, Merethe Roos, and Erlend Eidsvik, and features contributions from several prominent education researchers at various Norwegian educational institutions.
