Poema dividido en tres partes; Inferno, Purgatorio y Paraíso, cada una de las cuales consta de treinta y tres cantos de extensión muy parecida. El viaje de Dante a los tres reinos de ultratumba, representado en un continuo descenso, se convierte en una continua subida. Dante se encuentra a caballo de dos siglos; del 'duecento' se nutre su exigencia por la transcendencia, con su largo intinerario hacia Dios; el 'trecento' le lleva a profundizar en el hombre, a conocer mejor la vida terrena, a descobrir la realidad.
