Emerging pollutants and contaminants refer to chemicals that are not currently regulated, but present ecological or human health concerns, including, but not limited to, endocrine-disrupting compounds, pharmaceutical and personal care products, disinfection by-products, microplastics, persistent organic chemicals, etc., as well as their degradation products being found in air, water, soil, and food sources. This reprint details the most recent advancements that facilitate an understanding of the occurrence, distribution, and fate of emerging pollutants in the environment; risk assessments of emerging contaminants; as well as research exploring technology that exploits methods to reduce and control their environmental presence and adverse effects.
