Addressing a real interlocutor, an assumed audience, or an imagined public is a fundamental component of successful communication. In speech communication studies, vocal and verbal addressing—understood as a speaker’s stance toward their addressee—forms the core of analysis. Conversation‑analytic and linguistic perspectives broaden this view by adding further verbal and nonverbal dimensions, thereby opening up a multimodal perspective on speaking and communication. The contributions in this volume explore the phenomenon of addressing in its full breadth: in spoken radio news, in the use of AI for shaping modes of address in broadcast presentation, in musical‑instructional settings, in classroom discourse, in influencer talk, during theatre rehearsals, in acting for the feature‑film camera, and in digital tools for aphasia therapy. Taken together, the volume offers a comprehensive overview of how multimodally addressed speech unfolds its communicative impact.
