In 1946, the World Health Organisation defined health as a state of physical, mental and social well-being. In this broad sense, the concept extends beyond the sole domain of medical expertise and encompasses a wide range of fields. The social and solidarity economy is thus directly concerned with the good health of all, producers and consumers alike, including within the healthcare sector. Closely linked to social determinants (living conditions, the environment in which people live, the organisation of healthcare provision), holistic health is approached through the social dynamics of mutual aid and solidarity, arising from the participation of local stakeholders and residents.
