The novel's protagonist, Annetta Da Ponte, faces the hardships of downgrading with her family and gives voice to "thoughts and feelings aroused by life": memories of the Risorgimento and the cult of national identity, diary excerpts, excerpts from the protagonist's readings, and letters to her grandchildren Gino and Nicoletta form the common thread of a narrative with clear pedagogical intent.
