This work investigates the fatigue behaviour of single-sided girth welds, for which existing design standards provide inconsistent and insufficiently validated fatigue classes. Based on extensive fatigue testing as well as numerical and fracture mechanics analyses, the influence of weld root imperfections and defects is assessed, fatigue class recommendations are derived, and an approach for fracture mechanics-based fatigue life prediction is developed.
