Disturbing Tensions refers to the friction that exists between those involved in commemorating the Shoah and commemorating slavery in the Netherlands. In her study, Judy Jaffe-Schagen examines the role that heritage professionals play in various commemorative events and the strained relations that permeate the heritage world and society as a whole. Engaging with participants, locations and objects from all sides of the spectrum in both planned and chance encounters, she explores the historical origins and contemporary triggers of these tensions in commemorative practice. She discusses her own thoughts about the dynamic practices that reflect the ongoing cultural impact of their respective histories, presenting recommendations to enable heritage professionals to address these tensions and to approach commemorative practices with greater empathy.
