For centuries, the preservation and maintenance of cultural assets considered valuable and worthy of inclusion in the collective memory have been considered essential. Many examples of this can be seen today as testaments to past civilizations. However, it was especially since the creation of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) that steps were taken to defend and protect cultural heritage. Its initial conceptualization has expanded in recent decades since the post-war period, with the implementation of various conventions, declarations, documents, and commitments. During this time, its relationship with historical studies has not only been maintained but has also been strengthened and deepened in several areas. In Latin America, the vision of cultural heritage has specific connotations due to its rich indigenous past, the long and profound colonial history, and the independent development of its states, each with its own distinct national realities. In our region, a rich heritage tradition has been developing, incorporating global contributions alongside our own experiences, within the framework of a shared history that is itself considered a "cultural asset." Historians not only use heritage, but we also create, discover, and preserve it. That is part of our profession.
