The world we live in is undergoing major changes. Democratic ideals related to freedom of expression, equality and cultural diversity are under threat. Authoritarian ideas are on the rise, and political, cultural and social structures are in flux. A central part of this picture is political terror, which takes some of these developments to their extremes. Over the last two decades in particular, tensions have grown between far-right and extremist right-wing groups on the one hand, and far-right and extremist Muslims on the other. At the same time, related ideas can also be found in more moderate versions within mainstream environments. How should the more extreme positions be understood? What are the driving forces behind them? What is the situation in Norway? The book explores these questions through qualitative interviews and broader social analysis. This book is based on results from participation in the EU-funded research project DARE (Dialogue About Radicalisation and Equality) in which researchers from 13 countries, including Norway, participated; it builds further on DARE with a primary focus on Norway. The author explored these environments along several axes that differ from the more established research on extremism: The analyses include both the radical right and the radical Muslims, the paths in and out of extremist positions, and what we have called an environmental approach, where the main focus is not on individuals who have committed extremist acts, but rather the larger environments in which they find themselves. The final part of the book contains an outline of ten themes for dialogue as a strategy for counteracting further polarization over time. The book will be of interest to researchers, students, journalists and others who wish to deepen their understanding of extremist and far-right environments in the new Norway.
