The growing pressure on water resources demands a transformation in the way irrigation is designed, operated, and managed. In this context, this book presents a comprehensive approach that integrates hydraulic engineering, industrial automation, and digital technologies to develop systems capable of optimizing water use while achieving high levels of efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. The book goes beyond the conventional approach of technical manuals by integrating the scientific foundations of water management with the design, implementation, programming, validation, and maintenance of an automated sprinkler irrigation system developed through an applied research project. Throughout its chapters, the book addresses sustainable water management, the hydraulic principles of sprinkler irrigation, the design and integration of electrical, electronic, and hydraulic components, the programming of Programmable Logic Controllers, system monitoring, fault protection mechanisms, performance evaluation, and maintenance strategies. From an interdisciplinary perspective, it demonstrates how the interaction among sensors, actuators, control systems, and hydraulic networks enables the development of smart infrastructure capable of reducing water and energy consumption, improving operational performance, and enhancing environmental sustainability. Rather than merely documenting a specific project, this publication provides a transferable methodological framework for designing automated systems applicable to agriculture, green spaces, and hydraulic infrastructure. Through its balance of scientific rigor and practical application, it serves as a valuable reference for students, educators, researchers, and professionals in hydraulic, agricultural, environmental, electronic, mechatronics, and industrial engineering, as well as for institutions committed to technological innovation and the efficient management of water resources. In a context shaped by digital transformation, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence, this book provides the conceptual and technical foundations needed to advance a new generation of smart irrigation systems aimed at enhancing water security and promoting sustainable development.
