For over 130 years, normal schools were the primary state institution for training primary school teachers. Deployed throughout the country, they educated generations of educators who transformed the nation's educational and social landscape. In March 1974, the civil-military dictatorship ordered their permanent closure. Commitment and Adversity comprises thirteen chapters that trace this historical arc, from the Lancasterian origins of the 1820s to the years following their forced closure. Its pages challenge both nostalgic interpretations that idealize these institutions and purely institutionalist readings that reduce their history to a mere recounting of educational policies. Normal schools were spaces where discipline and creativity, the civilizing project and the social mission, the reproduction of order and the aspiration for change coexisted. Their protagonists were not passive recipients of state policies, but rather actors who implemented, interpreted, resisted, and reinterpreted them based on their own experiences and projects.
