Die massive Präsenz affektbesetzter Darstellungen von Gewalt in Filmen wirft die Frage auf, welche historischen Voraussetzungen diesem Phänomen zugrunde liegen. Ein Blick auf ältere Phasen der Geschichte von Bildern zeigt, dass dort ein anderer Umgang mit Motiven der Destruktion vorherrschte. Hans Zitko legt dar, wie sich die Spezifika der Interessen an medial präsentierter Gewalt seit Giotto sukzessive verwandelt haben. Dabei entlarvt er auch die Gründe für die Herstellung und den Konsum entsprechender Bilder in der Moderne: die Verwerfungen in der dem Subjekt auferlegten Säkularisierung sowie ein Mangel an Fähigkeit, die gewonnene Freiheit produktiv zu nutzen.
