Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are often considered a branch of artificial intelligence and have been a central topic across a broad range of scientific fields for the last two decades. Understanding of ANNs is expected to provide a systematic understanding of adaptive behaviors, including simple classical and operant conditioning in animals, as well as complex social and economic human behaviors designed to maximize benefits, and is also useful in machine learning and robotics. ANN aims to find an appropriate mapping from situations to actions. It can be defined as a class of problem-solving approaches that is closely related to various scientific domains. A set of chapters in this book provides a general overview of ANNs, while other chapters focus mostly on the applications of ANNs paradigms.
