Sylvia Kokot examines the ambivalent and complex history of methylphenidate, better known as Ritalin, from the perspective of media and cultural studies. Structured as a history of the substance, this volume traces its path through a dense network of laboratories, psychiatric and educational institutions, conferences, legal proceedings, and popular science texts. From its initial synthesis in the CIBA laboratories in Basel in 1944 to the debates since the 2000s regarding the medication of hyperactive children and adults, the history of methylphenidate is unfolded as a history of the measurement and control of movement. In doing so, the book examines both the underlying assumptions and concepts embedded in the technical apparatus and studies, as well as the narratives of popular culture that influence the conceptualization of efficacy and illness. Methylphenidate is not only a medication but also a cultural and media actor with the potential to challenge social orders. Numerous efforts at regulation and control run through its history of knowledge.
