In the spring of 2017, construction work for the Mur power plant in Graz unearthed segments of walls and a staircase. These remains belonged to the former Liebenau camp, the largest Nazi forced labor camp in the city. Originally established in 1940 as "Lager V" for resettlers, the complex became a transit station for Hungarian Jews on their forced death marches toward the Mauthausen concentration camp in April 1945. At least 34 individuals were executed at this site. Following a British military court trial in 1947, which resulted in two death sentences for war crimes, the area was literally left to be overgrown. Where barracks once stood, residential buildings and public facilities were erected, and for decades, this dark chapter of Graz’s contemporary history fell into oblivion. Marking the commemorative year of 2018, an exhibition at the GrazMuseum was dedicated to the Liebenau camp as a "site of condensed history." Newly discovered archival documents and archaeological relics have provided fresh insights into the events of the time. This richly illustrated companion volume offers concise background information and documents the central contents of the exhibition.
