Both climate activists and climate sceptics draw on religious terms, concepts, and imagery to persuade one another, and the wider public, of the validity of their respective positions. This emerges from the findings of the interdisciplinary research project on religion and climate change in the Netherlands, funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and conducted at Tilburg University between March 2023 and March 2026. The project aimed to gain insight into the ways in which religious language is employed within the climate debate. Over the course of three years, the research team focused on analysing groups active on social media in the Netherlands that engage with issues relating to climate change. A range of themes was examined in order to reveal the diversity and nuance of religious expressions surrounding climate-related issues. This volume brings together contributions from the four members of the research team, alongside a number of additional chapters that serve as case studies of themes connected to the topics addressed in the four core contributions. The chapters are organised around five themes that reflect the diverse relationships between religion and climate change in the Netherlands. These themes are: Dutch climate organisations and religious vocabularies; religious vocabularies and representations of climate change; Christian vocabularies in the framing of Dutch climate policy; ecological grief and meaning-making in rituals, performances, and material culture; and the Western cultural-religious repertoire in visual representations of the Earth.
