Generative artificial intelligence is fundamentally transforming linguistic and literary learning processes. What does this development mean for German language instruction, in which learning is tied to the body, perception, emotion, experience, and social relationships? The contributions in this volume combine perspectives from cognitive science, body phenomenology, media theory, and German language pedagogy. They examine differences between human and artificial cognition, transhumanist visions of the future, and the materiality and corporeality of texts. Furthermore, they discuss the physically impactful nature of chatbots and the emotional dynamics in human-AI dialogues. The volume also includes analyses of digital writing, reading instruction, and literary writing. Together, these contributions paint a broad picture of the opportunities, limitations, and tensions surrounding generative AI in German language instruction—with a particular focus on corporeality, materiality, affectivity, co-presence, and aesthetic practice.
