Diversity has been a central theme in higher education development for several years. Taking a critical approach to diversity, this study explores the field of higher education teaching. The focus is on the structural implementation of diversity—that is, on measures decided upon and implemented by the institutions themselves. This exploratory study is based on interviews with experts from Austria and Germany. The data is analyzed along three thematic strands: diversity as a teaching topic, diversity competencies among higher education staff, and the framework conditions for teaching. The study shows that the strengths and weaknesses of the concept of diversity, the (lack of) diversity among staff, the relationship to gender studies, and the importance of continuing education are identified as recurring themes. In the conclusion, areas for action are outlined for all three thematic strands.
