This volume emerges from the international conference Nature in Musical Modernism Since Mahler, held in July 2023 in the evocative landscape of Dobbiaco/Toblach, Italy—a place intimately connected to Gustav Mahler’s creative legacy. The collection brings together a diverse range of scholarly perspectives in order to explore how the idea of nature has served as a powerful force of inspiration across the arc of musical modernism, from the late nineteenth century to the present day. At the heart of this inquiry is the figure of Mahler himself, whose music functions as both a point of origin and a point of reference. Contributors examine Mahler’s complex dialogue with Romantic Naturphilosophie and trace how his aesthetic engagement with nature helped shape—and was transformed by—composers such as Delius, Berio, Stockhausen, and Sciarrino. The resulting essays illuminate how shifting philosophical and scientific conceptions of nature opened up new expressive possibilities in twentieth- and twenty-first-century music, offering alternative ways of hearing and understanding musical modernism. Drawing on recent discoveries, interdisciplinary methodologies, and previously unexplored connections, Nature in Musical Modernism Since Mahler presents a timely rethinking of the genealogy of modern music through the lens of nature. It will appeal to scholars and students of musicology, philosophy, and environmental aesthetics, as well as to all readers interested in the cultural history of sound.
