The Perimedian area – comprising the varieties spoken in south-eastern Grosseto, north-western Lazio, north-western Umbria and much of the province of Ancona – is an interesting case study for examining the dynamics that have shaped and continue to shape the linguistic landscape. This essay outlines the emergence and any shifts in the main linguistic boundaries (both those separating the Perimedian dialects from their neighbours and those within the area itself) in morphological and morphosyntactic terms. This analysis also lends itself to considerations regarding morphological and morphosyntactic theory, as well as Romance language comparison. The book is aimed primarily at linguists (particularly – though not exclusively – those specialising in Romance languages).
