The novel of Chariton, Chaereas and Kallirroe, belongs to the ‘love novel’, a model of great success in Greek hellenistic literature. Although its date has been largely discussed, there is some consensus about the possibility that Chariton’s is the oldest text preserved of this genre. As the novel texts in general it is marked by an elegant style and the reception of a long literary and cultural tradition. At the same time, the author uses a kind of historical patine, produced by the reference to well known events and figures.
