This volume gathers the two books of epigrams composed exclusively by Christian authors on episodes and characters of the religion that, from the fourth century onwards, became the official one of the Empire. Heading the Anthology, book I has 123 components said “pious and divine”, mostly by anonymous poets: dedications of monuments, invocations of Christ and the Virgin, ekphrastic and miscellaneous epigrams. As for book VIII, it offers a garland of 254 epigrams written by Gregorius of Nazianzus, one of the Church Fathers (Cappadocia, 329- 389), of which only 158 are actual epitaphs. The remaining ones are given in the form of prayers to the deceased one by their living relatives, authorial self-reflexions and, closing the book, a large series of epigrams (more than 40) against tomb-desecrators.
This book is included in DOAB.
