This book presents the semidiplomatic and interpretive issues of the most extensive work which houses the codex 142 of the Arquivo Distrital de Braga, corresponding to its second part, which starts calling itself Remedios varios, e Receitas Approvadas, but also includes, for the end, a copy of the well known and ancient calendaries, or fastos, distributing for each month of the year the recommendations about what to do for the maintenance of the good health, on the one hand, and about the agriculture of each month, of the other, and yet a long line of Several Secrets, with domestic revenues and advice, culinary, agricultural, veterinary, botanical, technic, and even magic and religious (healing prayers, etc.). Conceived as a treaty, it shows the collection of numerous natural remedies, from antiquity to the seventeenth century, mostly dependent on herbs, medicinal plants and trees, available to any person, and even more exotic products such as spices, or swallow nests, that the Discoveries put within reach of Europe by the Portuguese, originating both in Asia and in Africa or in Brazil. Organized by disease or also either by body parts, medicinal herbs and other ingredients, the manuscript highlights a prevalently preventive medicine and is not limited reductively to therapeutic medicine. In all the codex, and in many of the remedies, diet is key, and this is not a restrictive diet for patients, but of very specific and abundant dietary recommendations to maintain health in a much more timely and holistic perspective. The reader may find constant and rich cross-references between this part II of Codex 142 of remedies, the first part, of cooking recipes, already edited, and the third, about agriculture, with valuable and unique recipes and recommendations from de fields of agriculture, pecuary, veterinary and ecological animal husbandry. Despite the specificity of each part, the information, thorough and from a knowledgeable hand, reveals itself through the three notebooks repeated under different facets, complementary, forming an essential triptych to life: nourishment, health, agricultural and veterinary activity in perfect balance with nature and man.
