Do the mechanisms of epigenetics control our genes? Or maybe not? The field of epigenetics investigates the complex molecular interaction of genes and their physical environment. Epigenetic mechanisms can alter our DNA structurally, change gene expression and thus drive cellular development throughout life. They have currently been associated with numerous diseases and are known to shape both appearance and behavioral patterns. Environmental factors as well as lifestyle choices come into play and impart their “epigenetic” influence on our genomes. It seems our fate is not sealed with just our genes after all.In this volume, the interdisciplinary research group “Gene Technology Report” of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities brings together an interdisciplinary panel of experts to discuss what epigenetic phenomena are and how they transform our concept of genes and genomes. With contributions by:Jörn Walter, Michael Wassenegger, Stefan Knapp und Susanne Müller, Lilian Marx-Stölting, Christoph Rehmann-Sutter, Reinhard Heil und Philipp Bode, Vanessa Lux, Julia Diekämper und Anja Hümpel
