Iberismos

0 Ungluers have Faved this Work
The iberisms are connected to a central issue in political and historical reflection in European 19th and 20th centuries: how can a nation be defined? Which viability and future possibilities could it have? Is it pertinent to interpret them as expressions of a nationalism that gave rise to the unification of Italy and Germany? The concepts of Iberism and Hispanism (pan-hispanism, hispano-Americanism, ibero-Americanism, etc.) acquired diverse meanings depending on the historical conjunctures. They generated expectations of future, but also they brought about resistances. They were not able to mobilize popular groups in Portugal, and also in Spain, and never succeeded in organizing political movements with consistent action programs. However, they raised wide public reactions and encouraged the political communication between Portuguese and Spanish, feeding a live European transnational debate. Based in a broad research, we develop an integrated approach that takes into account the study of the actors involved and reviews the place of iberisms in political and historical peninsular cultures in a chronology that goes from the period of French occupation to the establishment of dictatorships in the 30’s..
