Explores the ways in which new Muslims were integrated into early Islamic society. How did new Muslims, standing at the crossroads of insider and outsider status, find their place in early Islamic society? Tracing their journey as they joined their new community, this book looks at how they articulated their identities within it. It focuses on Muslims of slave origins, who belonged to the Islamic community but whose slave background rendered them somehow alien, and considers how Islamic society itself changed to accommodate these new members. By revealing how early Muslims constructed and re-constructed their identities to fit changing contexts, this book celebrates the dynamism of Islamic history.
