In trying to better understand how and why the Arab Spring broke out, this book interrogates the nature of states in the Middle East, exploring the relationship between states, regimes and peoples. It does this by using sovereignty as a conceptual framework through which to unpack the complex relationship between rulers and ruled, between land and people, and between different understandings of security. It is a broad study which includes 5 of the Levant states (Israel, Jordan, Palestine, Syria and Lebanon), the 8 states that overlook the Gulf, (Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, and Oman), Yemen and Egypt. It engages with a changing Middle East states system, reflecting on how the shifting sands of regional politics after December 2010 have altered the alliances that have dominated the regional order.
