From to the introduction of bifurcated garments for women to the “cute” aesthetics of Japanese men to the current phenomenon of ungendered clothing, this book reveals the multitude of ways in which fashion maintains, destabilizes or transcends a binary gender system. While previous works have focused on the relationship between fashion and cross-dressing in relation to queer communities and for men or women specifically, this book brings together a diversity of historical and contemporary situations and Western and non-Western contexts in which people actively cross gender boundaries through fashion and dress.
