'On my fifteenth birthday, I went away from home in order to live in a far away, strange city. If I were to tell you the story as it happened, it would take me a week. But if I told you only the most important parts, that would take just as long. Perhaps this sounds like the beginning of a fairytale? But this is not a fairytale. Not at all.'The narrator of the tale of Kafka's journey leads the reader away from the material world of reality and along the banks of consciousness. A fateful prophecy, the legend of Oedipus, steers Kafka's labyrinthine journey. 'Kafka on the Shore' is the name of a painting hung on the wall of Miss Saeki, the intriguing and enigmatic librarian in the small town to which Kafka has run away. And 'Kafka on the Shore' is the name of a song from Miss Saeki's youth, when she loved a young man with the passion of Juliet for her Romeo. Kafka's path crosses with that of an old man, who understands the language of cats and who has a strange link to another world. With all the profundity, unpredictable twists and turns and ingenious magic realism that has made Murakami one of the world's greatest living authors, Kafka on the Shore explores the lengths to which our lives are governed by the hand of destiny.
