故事是从主人公渡边的回忆展开的,一首60年代甲壳虫的“挪威的森林”让“我”的思绪又回到了18年前患有精神病的直子和活泼坚强的绿子之间的感情纠葛。渡边一直都徘徊在她们两个人之间,一方面念念不忘之子缠绵的病情与柔情,一方面又难以抗拒绿子大胆的表白和迷人的活力。最后直子自杀身亡,渡边开始独自摸索此后的人生。
